Peter: Would the Montrose Settlement group have enough clout after all the money they've spent to threaten such a lawsuit? Or IWS? Patti: Zuni looks like such a sweetie...so awful for her and for you. |

I'm pretty sure the Fish and Wildlife Service, which is a member of the Montrose Trustee Council, could require non-lead ammunition. I know the Park Service does not want lead ammunition used, but I'm not sure about the legalities of requiring non-lead. Wouldn't it be ironic if they did make the island a veteran's hunting paradise and they started killing off the nation's symbol with their lead ammunition? |

I received a flyer from Pedro Nava, Assemblyman "Help Save the California Condor. A simple solution to help rpotect the condors. Simply removing the exposure to lead ammunitionin critical condor territories by requiring hunters to use the widely available, better performing, non-lead ammunition will help. "The Ridley-Tree Condor Preservation Act was instroduced to protect the few remaining California Condors, and is long overdue. With less than 276 California condors alive both in captivity and the wild today, they urgently need every Californian's support to survive." Call your district office to register your support for legislation to protect the condor Santa Barbara District Office (805)564-1649 Ventura County District Office (805) 483-9808. or visit www.assembly.ca.gov/a35 Ventana Wildlife Society - www.ventanaws.org Defenders of Wildlife -www.defenders.org/wildlife/birds/calcondor.html Peregrine fund - CA Condor Restoration - www.peregrinefund.org We need to push that this be a law for the entire State, not just the critical condor territories. If condors can die by eating game shot with lead bullets, so can eagles, and other creatures. |

Hmmm....Fish & Wildlife Service, the very same folks who came running over to Moorpark to kill Tuffy the Siberian tiger. Yeah, right, I have a LOT OF faith in those guys. I so enjoyed watching them airlift Tuffy's body away; live on CNN. Horrible day. |

I called Fish & Wildlife and was told to call FISH & GAME. I got a really nice F&G guy who said they encouraged steel shot. He didn't know young eagles ate carrion and seemed genuinely concerned. Gave tips on how hunters could avoid having eagles get the bad meat. It would really help. Fish & Game does not have jurisdiction over what type of ammunition must be used on Santa Rosa Island. He told me to call Ventura's NPS and ask for the Public Information Officer who happened to be the ranger on duty today, Bill Faulkner. Bill said they try to get hunters to use steel shot, and expense is not the problem. He said steel bullets have different ballistics than lead. Bill Faulkner referred me to Kate Faulkner, the NPS Chief of Natural Resources Management. She's in the office on Mondays and Thursdays, so I left a voice mail. You may have seen Kate in the Star's online video about the elk...titled something like "should they stay or leave." I got a capture of Tim Vail off this video. ![]() The first guy, the Fish & Game fellow, had good suggestions on what the NPS should consider when a hunting group is out there. Even if they do use lead bullets, there are simple steps to follow to keep the bad meat from reaching the eagles. He encouraged me to ask the NPS about this. |

P-Patti: Geez--my mind has totally blanked on that one. You know what? It could be. Very interesting. The two ladies I have recollection of are Cathy Reisnik (sp?) and Annie Little (sp?). You know who I mean. Cathy with the VCOE and Annie (biologist/mom) with Montrose, I guess. Is Annie with the IWS? That doesn't quite fit, even though it sounds reasonable. There is the friend of Copperwyrd's, whose name is escaping me...and she's with Montrose. The Star writer, recent Santa Rosa articles, emailed that he has an interest in the lead bullets and juvenile bald eagles. I goofed and told him they were still on the endangered species list, but emailed back and corrected my error. I don't think that would make much difference to him. |

Well--it's good we're going in this direction because the elected officials route is nothing but red tape & stacks of email and paper letters. Peter--Yes, thanks for clearing that up about Kate. My mind had literally blanked on that. The Ventura Fish & Game guy used to work for Island Packers and said those hunts were pretty closely monitered by the NPS, or they were when he was around there. He would like to see cooperation between the Vickers/Vails, that hunting company owned by Gordon Long, and the NPS. Ideally, he would want steel bullets used...just like Bill Faulkner with the NPS suggested. This F&G guy said he would like to see a NPS guide meet hunters as soon as they dock, then hit them up with how the "shot" areas of the animal must be cut out of the carcass & properly disposed of, even if it means taking it back to the mainland. Kate will know what he was talking about. Field dressing, etc. Even to me, this sounds like it would greatly minimize the potential for harm....but AGAIN, we're on an ISLAND, folks, and not so easy to have shovels and stuff one would normally be carrying in your pickup truck. If they can bring a high-powered rifle to the island, they can bring small digging tools. I'm going to ask Kate if she has any direct dealings with Gordon Long. There are these 3 groups who could be working together--and the island is ultimately handled through the Department of Interior, I believe. This is what the F&G fellow thought as well. That could be wrong. The point is this: Tim Vail does not own the land. |
