Hello, Peppermint and Sandie, we're all out of cookies and cake so a slice of corn bread from Carrow's restaraunt will have to do. Good morning everyone. OK, back to bed. |

Elaine Ruth - Yes, having family around is wonderful as I can see from your photos. All my friends who have been blessed with grandchildren say - "If I knew grandkids were so great, I would have had them first" Lana - You are so lucky there are still honest people around and $100 is a most generous reward. Nancy - Hope all goes well at the vet with Oreo. It does sound like a tooth problem. I have been to the vets twice in the past two weeks with Jessie. She has a urinary infection and was put on antibiotics for 1 week, but unfortunately, 5 days later it returned and now she is back on the pills for another 2 weeks. She is going to be 15 on Oct. 23, but apart from this setback, she is doing well TG. |

That is so funny, Hulabird. I had just uploaded the same picture to say the same thing! GMTA? ....or is it GBTA? The hole looks like it's getting bigger too! It's gonna be so interesting to watch the nestoration. With so much to do, it'll be the next best thing to watching one built from scratch!

Hi, Carole - don't know how to ask this to you, or anyone, without being graphic but I have never (luckily) had experience with a cat with a UTI but am suspecting one in the last couple of days with one of my own - problem is that she is a 'rescue', bordering on feral, never socialized and I have scars from the capture to have her spayed so getting her to the vet is an unbelievable ordeal. She lives in the house with my other 3 and snuggles with one of my boys who she views as her Lord Protector. She has started urinating outside the box - discovered this over the weekend. This is my question... how did the vet determine the UTI? Did you have to provide a 'sample' that was lab-tested? I got close enough to her - snuck up while napping with her boyfriend - to feel her ears and at least there is no indication of an elevated temperature. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! Nancy - sending good thoughts about your Oreo... |

Hi Joanie - I have never had a cat except for babysitting my grandcat but I do know that UTI's are much more prevalent in cats than in dogs and not using the litter box is a sign of a UTI. My grandcat urinated in the houseplants when he had it. With Jessie being a 5 lb. Yorkie, I was able to slip the lid of a plastic container under her while she was peeing and brought the sample to my vet. He used a test stick which determines protein, blood, bacteria, etc. and she had all the signs. How I discovered all this from the beginning was that she peed on our bed which she has never done and when I put her out on the balcony she peed again and it was very clear that there was blood in her urine. She is on Clavamox 62.5mg, twice a day and the vet said that this drug is used for cats as well. I know how difficult it is to get this kind of cat to the vet as my grandcat was the same. My husband had to wear huge leather gloves to pick him up while I wrapped him in a towel and literally threw him in the crate to bring him to the vet. His name was "Rambo" which explains it all, also a rescue kitten at the time. If it is at all possible could you use an eyedropper to get a few drops of urine where she peed and bring it to your vet, thus eliminating the trauma of transporting her. Hope this is the info you want and good luck. p.s. Jessie didn't have a fever. |

Carole - thank you so much for the 'tip' - and I apologize for not remembering that your Jessie is a dog and not a kitty - but you answered a question that I have been pondering. While she soiled the carpet 5 feet from the litter box, now I have placed a plastic runner over the area in hopes of detering her and she used the plastic (thank heavens for small favors) so I may be able to get a sample that I can take to the vet. My vet is cat exclusive which makes it nice for the cats to not have to wait in the ante-room next to a snarling Doberman and listen to the barks and howls emanating from the kennel area BUT they KNOW they are exclusive and sometimes I feel that they don't necessarily have the very best interests of the animal at heart - it is sooooooo traumatic to take my 18 year old frail cat in but they won't renew the meds that she has been on for 3 years without SEEING her every 4 months - I think it's excessive and they they suggest all kinds of tests that make me feel that I am neglecting her by NOT having them ... MRI, ct-scans and the like - her teeth are bad and I break up her food into teensy morsels or give her very soft foods that she can manage herself and I don't want to subject her to being put under to have what's left of her teeth cleaned. She is a happy cuddler who can still make the jump onto the bed - just has a sensitive tummy and has to take prednisone orally daily to keep any nourishment down. She was a rescue also at age 5 when abandoned by a family that lost their home in the horrific Laguna fires in Oct. of '93 (she still freaks a bit when a log in the fireplace crackles). She has to go in to see the vet on Friday so perhaps could deliver a 'sample' at the same time - I'm going to go look for an eyedropper so I can be prepared! |

Man in Black: Cornbread with butter and honey....yummmmm!! Joanie: our cat had a UTI but being male it was a bit of a different thing. he was developing a blockage of crystals...common in male cats that eat dry food. His symptoms were that he kept going into his catbox every few minutes. My brother's cat had the same thing and he would cry when he tried to pee. The vet can express urine and test that right there in the office. I'd suggest you call your vet and ask them the best way to get a clean sample and get it to them considering your situation with a wild one. I don't think Corky had fever either. I took him in RIGHT away....he had no blockage then, they put him on meds, he didn't get better, more meds, developed the blockage anyway while we were away (kennelled him with the vet just in case)....upshot...by the time we were all done.....$850!!!!!!! That's probably all more than you wanted to know....but that's my experience with UTI in cats. My female cats started "missing" the cat box and going in the plants, etc when they got old....both died of kidney failure. One was 19 1/2 years old, the other 16. I had that same vet experience with the older one where the step vet (regular one was on vacation) made me feel like a bad "parent" because I refused expensive tests before continuing any more cortisone shots and $400 worth of fleabusters for her. I just said..."I think I've done SOMEthing right to get her to 18 years of age!" OK...back to work... |

Joanie and Peppermint - don't ever doubt that you are both responsible, loving and caring pet owners. Some vet practices are businesses, and if we are lucky enough to find one, some are sensitive, loving and avoid unnecessary vet charges. My vet has even given me his home phone number in an emergency and when Jessie's UTI reoccured, I just picked up the pills and avoided another so-called checkup. I'm not saying his bills are reasonable, but he does not charge for recalls and he is always there to take a phone call. Over the many years of having animals, Alan said that the vet office was an annuity program. All my friends who have recently lost their dogs and who have gotten new puppies are using hollistic vets or naturopathy vets. They still have their DVM, but their practices are quite different. They believe that the food we give our pets is what contributes to their health or their demise. My first Yorkie, Sailor, lived to 19 and was fed the cheapest Puppy Chow and Dr. Ballards Beef Stew. Now most breeders and vets recommend these "Designer" foods that are 4 times the price. Jessie is on a Prescriptive Diet due to her having a too high protein level which has to be controlled. Anyway, your pets are sooooooooooo lucky to have you as owners and never forget that. |

Thanks, I never doubted myself for a minute...they just made me mad! Now I insist on seeing ONLY Dr. Otto...unless it's an emergency. Corky will be on a prescriptive diet the rest of his life, too, to prevent a recurrence of the urinary crystals....poor guy is sooooooooo bored with the same thing all the time. My female cats....fed them whatever was cheapest or that they liked...mostly Meow Mix and Nine Lives canned food. Lana: $100 sounds very generous to me. I once left my purse in a shopping cart in a parking lot going from dinner to my first evening of Christmas shopping in Ventura. Once I realized where I'd left it, I immediately went back but of course it wasn't there and the restaurant knew nothing. I DREADED going home to tell my husband I'd lost the checkbook as well as all the credit cards with only a couple of weeks left until Christmas. By the time I got home, a woman had called that she'd found it. She was also from Carpinteria and recognized me from my lovely drivers license photo. Having worked in restaurants, she decided to bring it home knowing that otherwise I'd probably never see it again. She refused a reward so I sent her a holiday flower arrangement to thank her. |
