Hello Everyone! I am writing the update a day early because I will be leaving the island this afternoon. We’ve been reviewing the recent postings and are glad to hear that you all have been investigating the issues surrounding Santa Rosa Island. Currently, there are still many eagles on Santa Rosa and a hand-full on San Miguel. According to the GPS data we have received, they are all moving regularly and seem to be healthy. We still have many eagles on Santa Cruz Island, about 10 that we know of. There is a fairly good chance that you will see an eagle when you visit the island, as K-26 and K-10 often perch near Prisoners Harbor. A-62 has also been in the area, combing the beaches for food. As for A-53, the adventurous young eagle, we have new data on her travels. She decided to make the trip up to Fresno, CA and then traveled east, across the Sierra Nevada Mountains between Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. She must have flown at 10,000 ft to cross in that location, a very impressive journey. She then dropped into the east side of the Sierras near Bishop and headed north to Mono Lake. Once at Mono Lake, she decided to turn around, heading back to Bishop, then back over the Sierras to the foothills outside Sequoia National Park where she now resides. She must be finding plenty of food to be able to fly such distances at variable elevations. We were able get eagle pictures this week of A-10 and A-62, both at Chinese Harbor, about 4 miles east of Prisoners Harbor. Enjoy! ![]() K-10 looking for fish from a high perch. ![]() A-62 feasting on some fish. ![]() A-62 taking a breather, unperturbed by the ravens. ![]() Watching the sunset on Montanon Ridge. |

What beautiful photos! As always, love to read the news as well. I've emailed John Scheibe, who wrote the recent Ventura County Star articles about the Duncan Hunter bill. Told him about the lead bullet issues and the recent arrival of juvenile bald eagles to Santa Rosa Island & mentioned Montrose Settlements Restoration Project. Asked him if he could get an interview with Tim Vail regarding the bald eagles and hunting ammunition. I wish he could do this!!! Thank you for the great photos and update. It's a highlight. |

John Scheibe is, in my opinion, one of the best reporters on staff at VCStar. Remember he did the Lewis & Clark serial story last year? Very well done. |

IWS, yes, we are becoming environmental advocates of our Channel Islands. Politics be damned.... we will create a grass roots effort to support NPS and IWS and whoever else is committed to restoring the Islands native habitat. There will be about 30 of us on October 22nd going on an educational hike of the Santa Cruz Island. We, as a group, will be hands-on and visiting the island will renew our commitment to those of you in the field... Thank you for supporting us with your weekly updates.. We will support you in return... Karen |

What a nice treat - a day early with the update! And that last photo at sunset was breathtaking. How wonderful to be able to track A-53 so far! Being quite familiar with the western and eastern Sierra, I was quite impressed at that bird's travels!! Thanks again for the wonderful update! |

ElaineRuth, I don't think so because K10 and K26 no longer have active GPS or radio transmitters I don't think. At least that's what I understood. |
