Thank you, Tiger. This was my hero. Larry Gallawa. I loved that man. He made me a better person. I am Alger on Mytoos but have not been active lately. You will see many many posts of mine from last winter and spring under the Parrot Depot threads. Those people who posted in memory of Larry are also my friends. They are wonderful people. Dr. Stewart Metz is the person who runs the Project Bird Watch link which opens at the bottom of all my posts, if clicked. There is tremendous corruption in Pierce County, WA. Larry fought the fight, even while sick and dying of cancer, with local bird breeders ridiculing him. He was incredibly brave. He was a retired engineer. His medications were very strong and affected his rational mind sometimes. It was so sad. Now I will donate to Stewart's project in memory of Larry, the man with the big heart and soul. It is a sad day for me, and very difficult to log on to Mytoos. I will go express my sympathy there, now... Thank you, Tiger~~ |

Larry died on Monday evening--October 2nd. I received an email from Washington this morning--and had not been logging on to Mytoos. He had an unusual, though not rare, type of cancer. He told me the name of it, but I can't recall. Gail Worth's husband has the same type of cancer. Skellis may know the name of it. Gail Worth was a big parrot breeder in the Los Angeles area, but has cut back, I believe, because of her husband's cancer. I don't know if he's still with us. Larry turned 59 in August. I think it was August. I sent him a cheery email---and it was hard to do. He spent thousands of dollars on animal rights lawyers, etc. He gave it all up to help birds. The corruption in Washington continues. The things I have learned in less than one year. Some people were so cruel to him. People who should have known better were cruel. I'm feeling better now. All those wild and crazy raptors and seagulls that were flying around here on Monday were spreading the news about Larry. (That's what I would like to think. ) It was a VERY bizarre day here with wild birds on Monday. It was an Alfred Hitchcock-like event.Edit: Larry was my age...I was rattled this a.m. He turned 59 in August. |

Good Morning all... Hulabird great photos, I saw all of those sights when there 2 years ago. Had my picture taken in front of "Duke" I like my men big  Patti sorry to hear about your hero. It is sad to lose someone that was like a mentor and motivator to you. You were lucky to have been inspired by him. This morning in the SF Chronicle a nice article about Hawk Hill and the hawk sightings. I may go up there on Sunday just to hear the Hawk talk and maybe see some. The only problem is that the Blue Angels are in town for Fleet Week and that is usually a prime spot to watch them do their tricks. May have to rethink this one. I'm waiting to hear from the vet regarding Oreo's surgery. I called this morning to see if she was ok through the night and she did fine without me and her brothers <_< I will check in later to let you know. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and Prayers. Actually today is the blessing of the animals for all of you who have pets etc. St Francis the patron saint of animals. Some of the kids are able to bring their pets to church to be blessed |

Patti: So sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. He was a warrior and I'll bet he inspired many others to carry on the fight. Nancy: Glad to hear Oreo is doing well. It's amazing what they can do for animals these days, isn't it? I've gotta get out and pull some weeds before the park evicts me for "general lack of landscape maintenance". to Management! Don't they know we have EAGLES here that need our attention???

You gave the County, State, First Name and when I added Parrot to the GoodSearch the resulting article made it pretty obvious he had to be the one. I had a large lump in my throat by the end of the article when it said he had cancer. |

Somebody posted a link to this sad story yesterday but there were no comments so I didn't want to see it be missed. I'm happy to see that comment by the biologist who in her ill-thought-out statement said something like she "isn't worried about losing this one eagle since there are many who are available to take her place" was not in this rendition of the story. Dr Sharpe would never be so callous. A scientist is a scientist is a scientist but if you love eagles and you're a scientist, that's different. Think how we would feel if someone said that about Cruz. ::shudder:: And I don't agree with them euthenizing her either. What do the rest of you think? WILSON BRIDGE EAGLES Martha Euthanized After Injury By Sandhya Somashekhar Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, October 4, 2006; Page B03 Martha the bald eagle, whose struggle to recover from an attack by a rival and return to longtime mate George generated national headlines, was euthanized yesterday afternoon at a bird rehabilitation center in Delaware. She was at least 13 years old. The beloved bird of prey was found Friday with a dislocated elbow in her right wing, a serious injury because of the strength and flexibility required to fly, specialists said. They speculate that she flew into a tree branch or power line during a recent storm. Veterinarians who examined her determined that her injuries were so severe and had been left untended for so long that she would never fly again and that as a wild creature who spent her life in the trees, she could not flourish in captivity. "George and Martha were mascots, if you will, of the Wilson Bridge Project, so it is a really sad day for the project," said John Undeland, a spokesman for the Woodrow Wilson Bridge expansion. George and Martha, who were named by bridge workers, had lived on Rosalie Island on the Maryland side of the bridge since the 1990s. Together, they produced 16 eaglets that helped bolster the region's eagle population. George has recently been spotted in the area, and it is believed that the two were still "bonded" when Martha's accident occurred. Bridge workers had become accustomed to the birds' presence, watching in awe as they fished, soared and raised their young. "Big tough crane operators, concrete guys, everybody just looked for the eagles," said Jim Nichols, a tugboat operator for one of the project's contractors. The pair's story captured national attention in April, when Martha was attacked by a rival female whom some workers have labeled "Charlotte the harlot." While George protected the eggs, Martha engaged in a midair battle that left her broken and bloodied. Bridge workers shooed away the intruder and whisked the injured bird to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research in Delaware, where she recovered in a few weeks. A short while after she was released into the wild in Delaware, the nation cheered to learn that she had made her way back to the nest and to George. On Friday, workers at the nearby National Harbor project noticed an eagle flapping and hopping around in a field. It was Martha, who was quickly returned to the Delaware center. Veterinarians considered sending Martha to Minnesota for an operation. But surgeons would have had to break the bones and fuse them, rendering her unable to fly, bridge officials said. Martha's remains will be sent to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service facility in Colorado, where they will be given to researchers, American Indians or others who hold permits to possess eagle remains. |
