Patti, I have read the articles that Tiger posted. What a special, selfless man. Thank God there are people like Larry looking out for birds and other animals (see the rigorous campaign by Peppermint and Patti and several others in the Santa Rosa thread). My condolences to the birds for his loss. Nancy, good news about Oreo. Should I send catnip to his hospital room? Elaine Ruth and MaMiMoBaMom, I miss you. Cheryl, (private but you know) ED and TN - all 3 of you need professional help, but my guess is that you knew that already. Elaine, Cumbrians, and Harpo- be watching for the mailman. Dr Sharpe and IWS Crew, have we told you lately that we love you? |

Hulabird, I was just thinking the other day, how did we ever let our national bird be put on the endangered list. I quess because people thought "Oh there are plenty of them". Their just wild animals. I wish I had something more profound to say. Some times I feel like we're such smart @#%!. |

no internet today at work - argh - so just now catching up Glad to hear that all went well with Oreo As always, so glad there are those special people like Larry in this world. His passing is surely sad but his deeds were mighty! HB: I heard about Martha. How sad after all that - It was nice to see that even the workers who have such a tough job/existence - were so touched by the plight of the pair of eagles! Hmmm does George now find a new mate? Do ealges mate for life and that's it when one is gone? I truly don't know - anyone? And then let's talk about love ... isn't it wonderful!!

Ohai Hikers whenever you have to add "just" to a sentence to modify a noun, you are lying. I hope with all the webcam popularity this year and even in schools there will be a new generation of passionate conservationists without having to be told that its just the right thing to do. Next year, there will be many more peeps and people will start to get involved. |

Harpo, can you pose that question to Dr Sharpe in the What are your questions thread? I'm interested in an answer to that. |

The web cam is amazing to me. When Chris was up in the tree with Cruz. I thought of all the teachers watching in their class rooms, and all the children who will want to be Biologists when they grow up. |

Ojai Hikers, your post (very profound) is still haunting me. Here is a little story about what's going on in our neighborhood. There is this lady who lives 2 houses down from us. She was widowed last year. The whole neighborhood, including us (ashamedly) has been conspiring to confront her about this inapproppriately huge tree she has in her back yard which is blocking all of our ocean view that we paid a mint for. We want her to cut it down so we can selfishly have our ocean view. Woody and I sit outside every night and look at all the birds flying in and out of that same tree. We enjoy them immensely. All of the sudden, one night when we had the liberal vs conservative tree hugger conversation (thank you Troth), I suddenly pulled my head out of you know where and realized, we can't cut that tree down. I talked to Woody about it and eventually got him on board. We have been talking to the neighbors last and this week about aborting the campaign to get rid of the tree. We are alas, met with resistance but we will continue the fight. Nobody except me anyway is brave enough to approach her so I think the tree is staying. The things we humans take for granted. I love it when my eyes open and I learn or instinctively know to do the right thing. Just like that man who returned Lala's wallet intact. He has 4 kids and one on the way. Do you think he couldn't have used the money? There ARE still good people left in the world. |

Hulabird that was a sad story about Martha. Perhaps she could have gone to a rehab place and then be and educational ambassador like Pimu. Sometimes the injuries are so severe that the bird after all efforts really gets depressed and almost gives up. I learned this in the raptor class. Flight is very important to them and they almost feel so inadequate and its like losing their dignity. It takes a lot of tender loving care and patience. I think she should have been given a chance. It's not just another eagle! Still waiting to speak to the vet. I think I will call now and see what's really going on. If Oreo had the surgery around noon she should be done. |

Hello......Been lurking today after being out and about at various appointments this morning. Patti, so sorry to hear about your friend. I too read the reports that Tiger posted.....and was totally sickened that people did not try harder, and to help, get that place closed down........Larry at least tried and will always be remembered because of it. Nancy, hope Oreo's surgery went well. Hulabird, thanks in advance of the mailman's delivery. I have mixed feelings about Martha......one part thinks they should have operated on her and saved her life but then the other side says for what? To sit in a cage for the rest of your life being unable to fly free........ It is different if she could have been involved with an educational project and gone around schools etc...but they just seemed to write her off....... Poor George. He lost her once and she returned, so he is maybe on the lookout for her returning again. The nest is looking a bit lonely today......no visitors today? See the IWS site back up again...no one home at the WE nest either. Taking Misty, budgie, back home later today. My aunt is back from her mini cruise. |

many years ago I went to Bush Gardens in FL and they had a pair of eagles there (if I remember right) that couldn't fly - they were used as goodwill ambassadors/education/etc. And several years ago we visited a closed landfill out east here on the island and they have an animal sanctuary there as well and they had an eagle who can't fly - he's used for educational purposes! maybe there's more to the Martha story - I can't imagine they'd put her down just because... |

Thank you, Hulabird, for re-posting this. I did miss it yesterday. What a sad sad story. I had heard the first part of it....up to Martha's release and reunion with George, but hadn't heard she was injured again, much less euthenized....and certainly hadn't heard that biologist's calloused remark! I'm speechless and feeling ill at the thought of it. Martha could have done so much more alive for education and restoration. Our society has become too much of a 'throw away' society. Everything is disposible....our plates, cups, cutlery, napkins, diapers, etc. etc. I see it all too clearly when trying to explain to our grandsons why they need to take care of things and they reply, "We can just get a new one." And now our national bird. I think that biologist needs to remember why she became a biologist to begin with. |
