eagleD: very deserving; this is my 2nd time around and he's just super - I thank every day that I met him and he's part of my life!

nancy: glad to hear oreo is home and doing well (even though shunned for the moment) :(

off to bed - it's late - it's raining - supposed to storm a bit - so sleepy time!

Be well

Somebody posted a link to this sad story yesterday but there were no comments so I didn't want to see it be missed. I'm happy to see that comment by the biologist who in her ill-thought-out statement said something like she "isn't worried about losing this one eagle since there are many who are available to take her place" was not in this rendition of the story. Dr Sharpe would never be so callous. A scientist is a scientist is a scientist but if you love eagles and you're a scientist, that's different. Think how we would feel if someone said that about Cruz. ::shudder:: And I don't agree with them euthenizing her either. What do the rest of you think?

.

I don't know - euthanizing is very sad, but perhaps the comment about Martha not being able to adjust to a captive life after 13 years as a wild eagle could have validity. I get the impression a lot of eagles that are kept for captive breeding or education purposes end up in captivity either from birth or relatively early in life (i.e ones that get injured as fledglings, for example). Perhaps Dr. Sharpe might have an idea what the issues would be with an older wild eagle. I think I read at one point that Pimu was adopted as an education eagle at an early age. It might be an eagle at that age either wouldn't be happy with a captive life or might not even be able to tolerate handling by humans.

Ostrich, very good points. My heart is breaking too, thinking of poor Martha, but we often hear that older animals do have a much harder time adjusting to captivity.
I know this is waaay off our subject of eagles, but isn't it just about impossible to keep great white sharks in captivity? I know that the Monterey Bay Aquarium has one currently and it's supposed to be doing well, but in general it is not easy to keep them in captivity. BTW, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has several webcams (Otters, Shark, Penguins and more. Here is a link for anyone interested

Patti, sorry for the loss of Larry. I've taken a look at the links (thank's Tiger), and one can only admire a person like Larry.

Hi to all: just a quick check in. Another long day of packing, but the end is in sight.

Patti: Larry sounds like an inspirational person. I will read up on him and his work. I'm so sorry about his passing.

Nancy: Yea, glad that Oreo is home and on the mend, but it sounds like you will have your hands full with his recovery, for the next few days.

Eagle D: you and your lady love sound so happy, it lifts my spirits to read your lovely posts.

Regarding Martha the Eagle: thanks for all the thoughtful points of view. They all have valid points in their favor. I probably fall in the euthanasia camp in this case. I'm thinking a wild 13 year old eagle would be awful hard to tame down enough to use in education programs, and it also breaks my heart to think of such a proud free creature sitting flightless in a cage for the next 10 or 20 years. It's just a sad ending all the way around.

Good night dear forum friends, have a pleasant evening.
