Lana, I can sympathize with Ben. My own hair is also very fine, and I've often thought about shaving it completely off every 5 to 7 years as that is supposed to be good for it and they say you will get stronger and more hair than ever before. I can attest to that, as I knew someone who did that religiously.
Of course I never did get the nerve up to actually do this.

My curse is naturally curly hair. Most of the hair dressers want to cut it short. It's hard to find one that can leave it long, minimize the curl and make it manageable. When I find a good one they move on and I have to start over.

I've heard of that too but also heard that it was an old wive's tale! Something about that it just seems thicker at first because the strands closer to the scalp are naturally thicker, and it also hasn't been damaged by chemicals, sun, blowdryers, etc.
At 37, I've noticed my own hair thinning a bit too  I like to tell myself it's because I no longer live near the ocean, where the humidity kept my hair happily thick and wavy.
Dave, there are people who would kill (or at least pay big bucks) for your curse!

Isn't it funny how we're never satisfied with ourselves? I wish I had big thick curls, my friend at work who has them curses them and wishes she didn't have so much. :)

I didn't say it was necessarily a really bad curse. I'm a bit proud of it. It is raining pretty decent here. Are those of you north of here (Riverside, Ca) getting rain?

Dave, we had some rain (sprinkles) last night and a little earlier today, but it's dry right now in Camarillo. They did mention rain for tomorrow though. We need it!

Lana, the reasons for the old wife's tale do make sense.
I did know this kid though, when I was a kid myself, who's mother always had him shaved off every 5 years (I think it was 5), and when I saw him last, his hair was the healthiest, fullest, most beautiful you could imagine. When he was little and did have hair in between shaving, it was definetly not so. So I don't know, go figure :)

I see we have more rain in the forecast. I'm in the County Flood Control here. If we get really heavy rains, I was assigned to a team to monitor the dams and flood control channels. It is the first time I have actually been on a team. I've been an alternate for the last 8 years. It could get interesting if we get heavy rains due to the El Nino this year.

So you have to be "on call" at all times when it rains?

When we had the bad El Nino about what, 10 years ago or so, we were living in Ventura at the side of a hill, and one night a Eucalyptus tree fell over right onto the bedroom, and the next day the mountain came down on us. We had a river going thru our garage and kitchen, and needless to say, we had to move out that very same day. I have some pictures of it, will see if I can find them and will post in the pictures section when I do.

Edit: I was even on Channel 3 or 9 news, and NEVER got to see it cause of course we didn't have any power.

I would love to see the pictures. Yes, I am on call whenever it rains but that is really nothing new. I'm the computer network administrator and when we have to open the flood emergency room we are on call anyway.

I don't envy you your job, although it can be very exciting (as long as no one gets hurt). Funny, I do remember being excited also. Scared yes, but also excited. Mainly when we were trying to hold back the mountain (what a joke).

I can imagine you were really scared. I would be too. I'm a little apprehensive at the possibility of wandering around on dark, wet, flooding nights checking levees and dams. But, it does make me feel more like a real flood control guy instead of strictly a support guy.

We had a few sprinkles here in the Santa Clarita Valley earlier but nothing happening at the moment, other than some ominous clouds looming above. I'd welcome the rain, as my car needs a good bath :P but I dread the thought of driving in the rain tomorrow. We are just clueless here in So Cal about how to operate a vehicle in the rain.

You got that right. A little rain causes havoc but not as bad as when we lived in Tennessee. A light skiff of snow and Tennessee drivers were much worse.
