Don't want to upset anyone, but I'm afraid we have another memorial to make......this time for A-53. Dr.Sharpe's comments on the What are your Questions? thread. [Everyone is doing fine. We expect about 33% mortality of the first year birds, but it is still difficult to find them. We actually just recovered another young bird near Fresno yesterday. I guess Fresno is not a good place for bald eagles.] [It was A-53, one of this year's releases. It was just lying under a tree in a cow pasture. Can't tell what happened.] I couldn't find any photos of her, may have missed them, but I did find these updates where she is mentioned. On the September 20th update [Well, it's Wednesday again! The birds seem to have settled into a bit of a routine over the last couple weeks. We still have a large number of them hanging around the west-end of Santa Cruz (including A-49), with a couple more making their way to Santa Rosa, and one bird jumping to the mainland (A-53). She flew to the mainland a couple days ago, and her last GPS point was in northeast Ventura county, but I've already received a report of a blue-tagged bird in the Carrizo Plane , so I'm assuming she's still heading north. We'll find out in a couple days when we get another GPS download from her. Hopefully she shied away from the fires on the way through (I'm sure she did).] From the October 3rd update. [As for A-53, the adventurous young eagle, we have new data on her travels. She decided to make the trip up to Fresno, CA and then traveled east, across the Sierra Nevada Mountains between Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. She must have flown at 10,000 ft to cross in that location, a very impressive journey. She then dropped into the east side of the Sierras near Bishop and headed north to Mono Lake. Once at Mono Lake, she decided to turn around, heading back to Bishop, then back over the Sierras to the foothills outside Sequoia National Park where she now resides. She must be finding plenty of food to be able to fly such distances at variable elevations.] So another of our precious eagles goes to the Rainbow Bridge. |

Thanks, Cumbrian, for the update. If our little eagles were not at risk and thriving, we wouldn't be here.... Let's keep our fingers crossed for A-49, she's our little baby. |

What an incredible bird. I am so proud of her for her adventurousness. What a shame that she had to leave so soon. At least she got to see some beautiful country and reach incredible heights before she left. |

Fresno is definitely not a good place, there is a lot of pesticides and rat poison used in the surrounding farm lands, my guess is that A53 somehow came into contact with poison. My father used to live there, several of his cats died from poisoning and my cousin used to live near there, she works in the health field and was always complaining of the various diseases and ailments caused by the use of pesticides... She now lives in Maui! Poor A53, to have flown so far. We must take consolation in that fact and that A53 now soars with A61 to the Rainbow Bridge. |

Ah Cumbrian, the news is so sad. A-53 was able to soar to great heights while she was here. There is comfort in that. One of my heros, the writer Terry Tempest Williams, says that if you make the decision to love nature, you will learn to live with a broken heart. I have found that to be the case, and worth every minute. On another subject, it appears that the Maine cam is up and running after a short glitch. I don't know where the National Wildlife Federation got their information, but I'm glad it was not true. |

ACK?!?!?! Isn't A-53 Steven Colbert's bird????? This is so sad. Just send somebody to kill me now if we ever get bad news about Cruz. |

Cumbrian - thank you for taking the time to gather the references to A-53 all in one place so that we might honor her memory - she sure packed a lot into her short life. Hula-B - you go right ahead and gripe to us and vent some steam - you have been through quite an ordeal and now it appears you are on the right side of it. SO glad you are back with us! |

On a recent trip to the Wildlife Park outside San Diego, I decided that when I retired, I wanted to be a volunteer at the Park working with the animals. Then I thought, "What am I thinking??" I get too attached. I would forever be a basket case because I would get too attached to all the animals. It took me 20 years to get another pet after my parakeet died. Oz, it makes a lot of sense, but I hate to think that 53 died because of pesticide. What a waste. |

The only thing I liked about Fresno was water skiing when it was 378 degrees Centigrade outside in the summer at night and Indian Bingo. |

A-46 was Colbert's bird. Maybe IWS should keep it a secret from us if A-49 ever goes down. I'm not sure we would be able to handle it.
