Hey All, It’s Wednesday update time again! We had a few happenings on and off the islands last week. As most of you heard, we confirmed two mortalities (A-61 and A-53). Unfortunately we are unable to determine the cause of these deaths, but we will sending them in for necropsy that may tell us more. It’s not always easy to find birds that have died, so anytime we are able to recover a dead bird it’s an opportunity for us to learn something about causes of eagle mortality (and possibly do something to prevent future mortalities). It’s sad every time we lose one of our birds, but over the years we’ve learned to accept the fact that not all the youngsters will make it to adulthood, although we’ve been very fortunate to have had a good survival rate overall, this year included. We couldn’t be happier with the success of the project so far, especially with the number of birds that have chose to stay on the islands (and build nests!). The rest of the birds we are tracking all seem to be doing very well. They’re all in the same places that Peter told you about last Wednesday. A-49 is still spending all her time in the interior of Santa Rosa island. According to the satellite data, she’s had plenty of company. You can check out her most recent movements at the IWS website (www.iws.org), where Peter has been busy getting things up-to-date. Her movements have been pretty representative of the other birds on Santa Rosa, where they seem to be traveling in groups, still taking advantage of the leftovers from the hunt. A-60 is still on San Miguel, along with a few other birds. They’re on the north side of the island, in an area that is heavily used by marine mammals. Marine mammal carcasses were assumed to be the preferred food source for young eagles on the islands before the pigs, deer and elk were introduced, so it’s interesting to see the young birds using these areas, probably as they did for several thousand years previous (they’ve found dozens of bald eagle bones in archeology sites on San Miguel island). A-62 is the only young bird still here on Santa Cruz. She’s still hanging around Chinese Harbor, where we’re still leaving a bit of fish on the beach for her to find. A-29 is also still here on Santa Cruz, but is spending time on the southeast side of the island, probably catching fish and basking in the sun. I was down at Prisoner’s harbor earlier today, where I saw one of the Catalina birds (either K10 orK26) swoop down to grab a fish while being harassed by gulls. I wasn’t able to see if it was successful, but judging by the reaction of the gulls, it must have been carrying off something good to eat. It was nice to see K10 spending some time in the nest this week. It looks like Pete and I will have to go adjust the camera slightly so that we can get the whole bird in the shot while on the perch branch. Anyhow, no new pictures this week, but I’ll do my best to get something for next Wednesday. I’ll see you all out here this Sunday! Congratulations to all those who won island tours. It should be a great experience. Dave |

Wow! What a great update. So much interesting information. I am glad that Cruz is in a group and not off by herself. Survival in numbers, I still worry that she is on an island where there is hunting but such is life, I will send her all the postive vibes I can muster. What is with the gulls harrassing the eagles?? Are they not eagle food?? I love birds but these are such an obnoxious species, mine, mine, mine. I chase them out of my bird feeder at home and tell them to go down the street to Burger King! Dave - I am really looking forward to Sunday so hope to see you out there again. Peppermint - Are you going after all!! I sure hope so. You can do it, you can do it, you can do it. |

Thanks so much Dave for the update. I love to hear about our Princess being with her court. sounds like she is happy and healthy. I am so sorry about 61 and 53. My heart hurts when I hear of any of our babies not making it. Wish I was in on the trip out to the Island. You all have a great time. Take lots of pictures to show us. LOC

Thank you for the very detailed update, Dave. It was a very sad week losing both 61 and 53, but I am heartened to know the others are doing so well. Thank you for letting us know all the goings on. |

Dave and all the IWS crew - we are so very grateful for the updates on all the eaglets and eagles - even though it so sad and difficult to hear of the loss of A-53 and A-61 any of the eagles, really. But it so good to hear that most are doing so well! I feel better about A-49 being with others. It does seem like there is safety in numbers. Looking forward to meeting you on Sunday. Thank you for the Wednesday updates - we so appreciate it!

Great update Dave......Thank You so much. Great to hear that our girl, and the other eagles are still safe, and she is still with her friends. Sorry we cannot make the trip on Sunday. We would have loved to have met you, and all the forum members/family/friends, but we hope that we will be able to meet you and other members of the IWS team when we come to California, hopefully next year. |

Thank you very much for the update, Dave. I check A49's map every few days to see where she is. The update fills in all the gaps about Cruz and the other eaglets. Maybe someday this Ontario girl will be able to make it to the California islands to meet the crew, but for now the updates are the next-best thing. I don't know what I'd do without them. We are so lucky to receive these updates. The eaglets on Vancouver Island (Saanich) who also had a "cam" audience have left now. We'll never know what happened to them. I think back to banding day and am grateful that Cruz is being monitored. |
