Thanks everyone for the great reports on the trip. I am in awe of you all making the hike to the nest. I know all of us would have loved being there and look forward to more details and photos. It's great seeing some of the faces behind the names. |

Dear Hulabird, Cumbrian and all: I was so concerned about your information deprivation that I jumped out of my hot bath. Finished my chores, and decided to give you a more complete update of the trip to Santa Cruz Island. Last night I met Patty, and met her flock. We did a little bit of singing and dancing for the cockatoos (well actually more than just a little) had some dinner and talked until around 11:30 p.m.. I was up early and drove to the Island Packers parking lot, where it looked like there might be a significant amount of fog. The CRUZ Director passed out badges to all and assorted and the first three surprises of the day occurred in close succession. First, Peppermint Patti showed up, despite her fear of seasickness and brought her friend. Then, Eagle Duo opened their box of surprises and started handing out Eagle antenna heads to each of us. For while it looked like Peppermint Patti would not be able to get on the boat, because the return boat was going to be full. But somehow, they found room for two more. We spent a lot of time introducing ourselves checking badges, and generally having a good time. We began to go on the boat and I had my third surprise of the day, a man in the boat stood up and said stand still so I can take your picture. Much to my surprise,. it was my next-door neighbor John and his companion. Neither of us knew that the other was coming, and he had just won the tickets, the week before. The introductions, and hugging and chatting continued on the boat. On the boat was a photographer from the Ventura County Star, who thought this is going to be a boring trip. So he was napping on the trip over. As we came out of the harbor of the fog began to lift. About a third of the way out to the island (right about where the oil rigs are), we hit deeper water and pods of dolphins started jumping over the waves, riding the bow wave and racing with the boat. I saw at least 50 of them. As we came to the island, we stopped at scorpion bay first and let off the campers and picked up two more of our members. We then went farther down the island To Prisoners' Bay as the boat pulled up to the end of the dock there stood Dr. Peter Sharpe and Dave partway down the pier was a spotting scope. Peter then pointed us to a tall, dead tree about 100 yards from the end of the pier (the part connected with the land) pair and there in all his glory was K26 sitting at the end of the tallest branch. Peter then pointed to a Rocky point farther down the beach and half way down the point was K10 in silhouette. Cameras were going off, and we were told by the Island Packers crewmember that we had to meet with Colleen from the Nature Conservancy for instructions, and we could only have five minutes to take pictures and look to the spotting scope. As you can imagine we were all very excited at all of our surprises so far, and people were exhilarated by the unexpected and fabulous appearance of two thirds of our Eagle family. Once we had completed our orientation, we still had a few moments to take photos of K26 and we watched K10 fly off the point and around to the other side. People did could just not believe how fortunate we were to have such a welcoming committee meet us, and I for one felt that the trip had already exceeded my high expectations. We eventually broke into three groups, several people were not feeling well (but not from seasickness and by the way, Peppermint Patti was just great and wasn't sick at all) and decided to stay on the beautiful beach. The fittest people decided to take the 5 mile round trip, strenuous hike with Peter (although the guide said it would be approximately 4 hours round-trip. Peter mentioned that he could make it each way and 40 minutes). Those of us who were not so fit decided to take a walk with Colleen towards the center of the island. Of course we all had to sign papers waiving any liability, if we got hurt or killed. We also had to sign papers, just to come on the island. Five of us went on the walk with Colleen, and we saw a number of native plants, including Lupine, wild roses, fennel, mugwort, blackberries and other plants. We also got pictures of scrub jays, which exist only on Santa Cruz Island. We walked about a mile, all told. Then we went back to the picnic benches, which were being guarded, because the ravens have figured out how to open coolers and unzip backpacks for the food. We had a lovely lunch and then walked on the beach, while a number of the people on the tougher walk trickled back having left the group part way. It was really interesting that there were a number of animal bones all over the beach and they were beautifully colored rocks and shells. One of the members found the skull of the pelican with upper beak attached and try to sweet talk Peter into telling her that she could take it off the island, however. We were seriously told that nothing natural or archaeological could be taken off the island. While we were there boaters were doing a beach cleanup of the island and IWS and the nature Conservancy or providing lunch for them. So there was no shortage of food. Eventually, Peter and the strongest members of the group returned, having seen Cruz’ nest. They were very excited. Even the photographer got into the spirit and although he did not complete the longer hike, he really warmed up to the story about the Eagles. Peter, and most of the women did a group mantle for you, and also posed for a number of other pictures. Peter stood and talked to us for while and when it was time for us to go back on the boat, he walked us down to the end of the pier to say goodbye. By the way, that man has a sweet tooth. We went back to scorpion bay, and they loaded a large number of people with their camping equipment and kayaks. The kayaks were strung end to end and pulled onto the boat to be placed in the racks. The trip back was pleasant, several of the members took naps, and we arrived back at the harbor and dispersed. About 20 of us went out for fish and chips, which were fantastic. The plates were so big that we couldn't finish them and wished we'd had the fish wave over the island so that Cruz would come back for a snack and a visit. That's all for now, I hope this will hold you over until the deluge of posts and pictures you will be getting tomorrow. Sylvia |

Great account of the day, skellis/Sylvia! And great pictures of the trip! Thank you Cumbrian & Hulabird for all the wonderful pictures and videos of the days activities on all three nests! Looks like they all kept you busy so you wouldn't have too much time to listen to the click of the clock. We had a wonderful time and are so glad we went. It was the best getting to meet so many from the group! I've downloaded my pictures, but need to crop and resize them before posting. Well Leyla just crawled up into my arms, so I'm gonna call it a night and enjoy her sweet hugs! |

Can you copy and paste your post into the Cruzneyland thread so it doesn't get lost? 'Preciate it. Also Patti told us what a great time you both had singing and dancing for her flock. My toos love to dance and the louder the singing, the more fun they have. |
