There were at least two Cruzers present who did not get into the pictures: Skellis and Cockney 2. My apologies to you. I look forward to seeing your smiling faces in some of the other pictures.

Hey all....know you are resting up from our wonderful day. So nice to meet you.....and if the trip had ended with the arrival at the pier...with Peter showing us "mum and pop" in the trees..it would have been worth it all. Wondering.....do you think those eagles were really the hand puppets. What were the chances of seeing THOSE TWO eagles on arrival???? Waiting for John's long distance lens to tell the truth! Sleep well all. great day on a beautiful island. Susan |

Oops! I didn't realize there was a thread for the trip to Cruzneyland, so I will move my post over here from the October 22 thread. ********* Well, I swore I was going home and straight to bed, but of course I had to check in with the board. What terrific pictures Sarao! I think you captured the day very well. What a perfect, perfect day. I wish everyone could have been there. It was so fun to meet everyone. And what a special treat to have Kathy meet us at the boat in Ventura and then to have Peter and Dave meet us on Santa Cruz. We were very lucky that Peter had whistled for K-10 and K-26 so that they would also be at the dock waiting for us. Peter has done a terrific job training them. I can't describe the thrill of seeing the eagle couple in person. And then to see Cruz' actual nest!! What a special, special day. Thank you Kathy, Peter and Dave for meeting us. Icing on the cake! Thank you to Karen for doing so much work to make sure we had a great day. Everything went so smoothly. And I love my name tag! Thank you Eagle Duo for the eagle antennae toppers. They are really cool. Thank you Hulabird and Cumbrian for all the great captures of the nests today. It was so great to meet all of you today. I am so glad that I did not miss this trip. Perfect. Absolutely perfect. Happy Birthday, Ojailala!!! |

Susan, I know those peeps out there weren't hand puppets. How wonderful it was to see you all through Sara's eyes. Can't wait for more pics. I just knew in my heart that Dr Sharpe would do something like this. Dave, you aren't getting pushed to the back of the bus either. How wonderful that both of you were out there to greet the A-49ers. Someone text messaged me that you two looked like twins today. Where is my nitroglycerin? And have we accounted for all our peeps after the trip. I've noticed that most of you are my age'ish and a day with eagles and Dr Sharpe and the IWS Crew must have been hard on the old ticker. Calling Eagle Duo. Jann, hello hunny bunny, this is the first we've seen of you. You are so delish and I can't wait to mantle you. I got a call from Sandie after your dinner party. She was so excited to meet everybody. Bless her heart for getting on down there. I don't know what to say except my cup runneth over. |

I've had a hot bath and a morsel to eat. Whew! Here are some more pictures. These are from my friend Valori who said today was one of the best days of her life. It is right up there as one of mine too. Thank you Karen for the idea and the footwork to make it all happen. http://picasaweb.google.com:80/sviluppomei...SantaCruzIsland |

Moved from the other thread and corrected Dear Hulabird, Cumbrian and all: I was so concerned about your information deprivation that I jumped out of my hot bath, finished my chores, and decided to give you a more complete update of the trip to Santa Cruz Island. Last night I met Patty, and met her flock. We did a little bit of singing and dancing for the cockatoos (well actually more than just a little) had some dinner and talked until around 11:30 p.m.. I was up early and drove to the Island Packers parking lot, where it looked like there might be a significant amount of fog. The CRUZ Director passed out badges to all and assorted and the first three surprises of the day occurred in close succession. First, Peppermint Patti showed up, despite her fear of seasickness and brought her friend. Then, Eagle Duo opened their box of surprises and started handing out Eagle antenna heads to each of us. For while it looked like Peppermint Patti would not be able to get on the boat, because the return boat was going to be full. But somehow, they found room for two more. We spent a lot of time introducing ourselves, checking badges, and generally having a good time. We began to go on the boat and I had my third surprise of the day, a man in the boat stood up and said stand still so I can take your picture. Much to my surprise, it was my next-door neighbor John and his companion. Neither of us knew that the other was coming, and he had just won the tickets the week before. The introductions, and hugging and chatting continued on the boat. On the boat was a photographer from the Ventura County Star, who thought this is going to be a boring trip. So he was napping on the trip over. As we came out of the harbor of the fog began to lift. About a third of the way out to the island (right about where the oil rigs are), we hit deeper water and pods of dolphins started jumping over the waves, riding the bow wave and racing with the boat. I saw at least 50 of them. As we came to the island, we stopped at scorpion bay first and let off the campers and picked up two more of our members. We then went farther down the island toPrisoners' Bay. As the boat pulled up to the end of the dock there stood Dr. Peter Sharpe and Dave. Partway down the pier was a spotting scope. Peter then pointed us to a tall, dead tree about 100 yards from the end of the pier (the part connected with the land) and there in all his glory was K26 sitting at the end of the tallest branch. Peter then pointed to a rocky point farther down the beach and half way down the point was K10 in silhouette. Cameras were going off, and we were told by the Island Packers crewmember that we had to meet with Colleen from the Nature Conservancy for instructions, and we could only have five minutes to take pictures and look to the spotting scope. As you can imagine we were all very excited at all of our surprises so far, and people were exhilarated by the unexpected and fabulous appearance of two thirds of our Eagle family. Once we had completed our orientation, we still had a few moments to take photos of K26 and we watched K10 fly off the point and around to the other side. People could just not believe how fortunate we were to have such a welcoming committee meet us, and I for one felt that the trip had already exceeded my high expectations. We eventually broke into three groups, several people were not feeling well (but not from seasickness and by the way, Peppermint Patti was just great and wasn't sick at all) and decided to stay on the beautiful beach. The fittest people decided to take the 5 mile round trip, strenuous hike with Peter (although the guide said it would be approximately 4 hours round-trip. Peter mentioned that he could make it each way in 40 minutes). Those of us who were not so fit decided to take a walk with Colleen towards the center of the island. Of course we all had to sign papers waiving any liability, if we got hurt or killed. We also had to sign papers, just to come on the island. Five of us went on the walk with Colleen, and we saw a number of native plants, including Lupine, wild roses, fennel, mugwort, blackberries and other plants. We also got pictures of scrub jays, which exist only on Santa Cruz Island. We walked about a mile, all told. Then we went back to the picnic benches, which were being guarded, because the ravens have figured out how to open coolers and unzip backpacks for the food. We had a lovely lunch and then walked on the beach, while a number of the people on the tougher walk trickled back having left the group part way. It was really interesting that there were a number of animal bones all over the beach and there were beautifully colored rocks and shells. One of the members found the skull of the pelican with upper beak attached and tried to sweet talk Peter into telling her that she could take it off the island, however we were seriously told that nothing natural or archaeological could be taken off the island. While we were there boaters were doing a beach cleanup of the island and IWS and the nature Conservancy was providing lunch for them. So there was no shortage of food. Eventually, Peter and the strongest members of the group returned, having seen Cruz’ nest. They were very excited. Even the photographer got into the spirit and although he did not complete the longer hike, he really warmed up to the story about the Eagles. Peter, and most of the women did a group mantle for you, and also posed for a number of other pictures. Peter stood and talked to us for while and when it was time for us to go back on the boat, he walked us down to the end of the pier to say goodbye. By the way, that man has a sweet tooth. We went back to scorpion bay, and they loaded a large number of people with their camping equipment and kayaks. The kayaks were strung end to end and pulled onto the boat to be placed in the racks. The trip back was pleasant, several of the members took naps, and we arrived back at the harbor and dispersed. About 20 of us went out for fish and chips, which were fantastic. The plates were so big that we couldn't finish them and wished we'd had the fish to wave over the island so that Cruz would come back for a snack and a visit. That's all for now, I hope this will hold you over until the deluge of posts and pictures you will be getting tomorrow. Sylvia |

Sylvia, what a wonderful story teller you are. We could close our eyes and imagine we were with you all. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And thank you for taking the time to write this when you were probably exhausted from your fantastic day. Of course Cruz's parents would come to meet you, they know who loves them! |
