Very well said MIB and Denny. Thank you! Just one more thing about hunting and then I promise I'll shut up. These population controlled hunts that we have in Germany really are necessary, like it or not. And I do understand that. If we didn't control them somewhat, they would multiply like crazy and eat away the farmers crops (it's true, I've seen it happen), as well as spreading deseases faster and easier among themselves and humas. Okay, off my soapbox now. |

Bea: Culling is a thinning of the herd....or population control. In my mind, culling in nature by predators is a removal of the least fit...the weaker of the species...which ultimately results in a stronger herd. The predators naturally go for the weaker ones because they are easier prey. Hope this makes sense? |

Ojai Hikers - I lived in Oxnard, and worked on Port Hueneme in the late 50's so your post brought back many happy memories. I lived on the beach and loved walking it most days and I do remember the sand dollars, etc. I'm glad I left before the area changed. I had heard about the foxes and pigs that were on the island but was too young and dumb to realize the perils that man brings to this planet. I only hope we can educate enough people to turn things around. Bea - I was raised in northern California and hunting there was not a sport but a necessity so I understand what you are saying. There were many acres of crops that were being decimated by pheasants and every year the farmers had to go out and kill as many as possible. I couldn't be involved because I have always been an animal lover but I did have to accept the need to do this. Every year there were more pheasants so all they did was thin the numbers each year and we all ate the kill so nothing went to waste. A sad fact of life. Bee

Peppermint, thanks for the explanation of "culling". I had never heard that word before (you know, being a foreigner and all  ) and thought that's what you call it when cleaning and skinning the animals. I've been in this country 21 years now and never went to school here, (didn't even speak much english when I first came), but even after so many years I still come across a word now and then that I've never heard before. I like learning new words! Thank's! |

You know peeps, I was reading back on Roger's post, and I think I miss-quoted something here. Roger said he knew Carey Stanton while working on the island. Somehow I made Carey Stanton out to have been his employer. Sorry for the mistake! |

Bea: Don't feel bad...I never knew the term culling until I was in college. I learned it in the Animal Husbandry class I was forced to take as part of my Ornamental Horticulture degree. I was just glad I didn't have to take the lab where it was rumoured you had to castrate sheep with your teeth! |
