Hey All, It was nice to see everyone who made it to the island last weekend. Pete and I were very happy that so many people were able to make the trip. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. I’m going to make the update a bit short this week, since you’ve been posting more and better pictures than we’ve been able to get lately anyhow. Most of the birds have been on Santa Rosa and San Miguel islands over the past week. A-49 is still on Santa Rosa, spending her time in the interior of the island, along with several of the other youngsters, as well as a few older birds. A-60 made his way to Santa Rosa from San Miguel earlier in the week. A-04 (the female from the grassland nest) has also been spending time on Santa Rosa island...I guess it's pretty hard to turn down a free meal this time of year. A-62 was hanging around Chinese harbor, but recently made a big trip to the southwest end of the island, maybe with A-37, who also spent some time in the same area. Chris went looking for A-62 today, but wasn’t able to spot here, although he did get her VHF signal, along with A-37. They must have become travel companions as the last couple eagles still here on Santa Cruz. This week Peter and I did some work on the webcam, mostly getting it repositioned and setting up the remote zoom capabilities. Pete hiked to the camera/nest area several times over the past few days, logging well over 25 miles of island trail. In the end he was able to get the camera nicely focused and zoomed and was eventually able to get the remote zoom working. We're pretty excited about being able to zoom in on the eggs and newly hatched chicks this season. We also have a microphone working in the nest tree, so if we can figure out how to get it online you'll be able to listen to all the activity at the nest. Peter told me that a helicopter has been seen near the nest lately, so I sent an email to our contact with The Nature Conservancy, requesting that it stay a bit further from the nest. They’re doing some important work in the area right now, but they’ve always been happy to cooperate with us in the past. We (and they) don’t want to do anything that may scare the birds from that area, even though nesting season is still a few months away. The same helicopter was on the island all last year, so the birds are probably used to it by now anyway. Well, that’s about all I have for this week. Chris and I are going to spend the next week surveying the island for birds without GPS or VHF transmitters. We’ll do our best to get some pictures for next weeks update. I’ll talk to you all then. Hi Dave! Thanks for your update, fun and easy to read as usual. I'm so glad that you are able to track the eagles, especially the juveniles, so accurately. The work you all do is amazing! The webcam is looking great. I'm really looking forward to zoom and sound in the coming season. Have a good week. I'll be thinking of you. |

One of our trip members, Saraoh, was telling me that she had visited the NC side of the island and described the well-appointed accomodations for the major contributors of the Nature Conservancy. I am a little amazed at their secrecy regarding their efforts on Santa Cruz. But, Donna came aboard our boat on the return trip and handed out some lovely NC brochures and I know they have recently purchased some property along the Santa Clara river for restoration. |

Thanks, Dave...nice to know you sent them an email about the helicopter...it seems like if we can see it on the cam, it might be too close? Will A-04 go back to Santa Cruz to nest? Where is her mate? Will he look for another lady eagle if she doesn't get her tail feathers back to her own territory soon? Dave: what was the guy's name that was with you on Sunday that was working on the fox research? I'd like his name for the next part of My Story. |

I didn't see a 3rd IWS person there, Peppermint. Did I miss something? Is he in one of the photos? |

The fox researcher that came over on the boat with you was Blake. He also worked for me earlier in the year when we were surveying for the golden eagles. |

Thanks Dave for the update. Great to hear that our girl is still doing well and still with her peers. Thanks too, for sending the e-mail, requesting that the helicopter avoid our nest area. Did you know that everyone thought I was hallucinating when I said I saw a helicopter go past the nest? Fortunately I had the good Dr. on my side to verify I was completely sane!!!! Good Luck with your search this next week. |

Thanks Dave for your update. I wasn't part of the trip to the island but I now have a much better perspective of the whole area and how beautiful it is and how important it is that we keep it that way. |

Dave, thank you for another great weekly update. I'm always glad to know that Cruz and the other juveniles and adults are doing well. I can hardly wait for zoom and sound! I do hope that you can figure out how to get the sound working. For me, it is a huge part of the experience. Sometimes on the Vancouver Island cams, if you couldn't get the picture, you could still hear what was going on. It was wonderful in the early morning hours. I was worried about the helicopter coming so close to the nest. Thank you for contacting them. Maybe it's different people flying it this year and they aren't as cautious about staying away from the nest. Thanks again for the update. |
