Peter: what is the relationship between eagles and ravens? Why don't the eagles just EAT them?? The ravens seem to hang around in the same places a lot as seen in your trail cameras and on the livecams...I thought it was to scavenge any tidbits left behind but now we see them trying to STEAL the nests...twig by twig. We don't see the gulls doing that. Is there a symbiotic relationship between eagles and ravens that they actually need each other for some reason?

One thing is I'd be willing to bet that it would be hard for the eagles to catch the ravens, or too much effort for them to be bothered. Smaller birds are generally going to be more manuverable and difficult to catch for a large bird like a bald eagle, who aren't really made for catching prey in the air. You can see this with other birds like hawks and falcons who are often mobbed and harrased by small birds. You'd think that the hawks would just eat them, but it's not very easy for them to do.

Ostrich, my deceased dad LOVED crows around his pigeon lofts because they harrassed the hawks that constantly lurked for racing pigeons. Dad lured crows with discarded pigeon eggs. Yep, crows are fearless too. I used to dislike them, but when I lived in another home, I grew to respect their community. They're very bright. I've respected them for about a decade.

The eagles put up with the ravens and probably look for raven activity to find food to scavenge. Because neither the bald eagles nor the ravens are actually going to nest until at least February (March or April for the ravens), there is no need to defend the nests now. Most of the sticks they are bringing to the nest are most likely going to get blown away again during the winter storms and they'll have to rebuild starting in mid-January.
