Dr. Peter Sharpe (to honor Hula going 2000): I was just reading over on eaglefix about the delisting of the Arizona balds as an endangered species. What is the benefit to Fish & Game to hurry up and delist them? Is it a funding issue for them that the sooner they can delist an animal/bird they can put their resources elsewhere or is it political or.....why?? Why not protect them as long as they can?

The delisting is at the federal level. Bald eagles were moved from endangered to threatened in 1995 and Clinton announced in 1999 that they would be soon removed from the list altogether. Safeguards are still being worked out to make sure that they don't go back on the list. The number of breeding pairs in the lower 48 States has gone from about 500 in the 1960's to about 8000 now. Once they are off the list, bald eagles will still be protected by the Bald Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Species Act and will likely still by on a state's endangered/threatened species list.
