Here is another link that I think has a link to some of the webcam information: http://www.we-energies.com/environmental/p...ine_falcons.htm |

Here's a couple of pics I snapped at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge from last weekend. I thought the coloring on the immature red tail hawk was most interesting. It is hard to see in the pictures, but his breast was lighter than the picture shows. Click for larger pic Northern Harrier Northern Harrier Immature Red Tail Hawk Immature Red Tail Hawk |

Bill, this is slightly off topic, but worth a mention. I used to occasionally post videos to IFilm.com, a pretty nice site. While deleting old email a month or so ago, I ran across one of their messages to me that they had to withdraw several of my videos because of music...and copyright issues. The irony is I only use old classical music...and have received personal permission from Lew Silva and Jay Red Eagle to use their music, just so long as I acknowledge them. I haven't checked to see what videos may have been removed. One music rep told me that YouTube is really breaking the copyright laws and she doens't know how they get away with it. Since you brought it up, it's a good time to mention that here. Can't hurt. |

Bill--I happened to walk into the office and see the bird on the cam right before it flew off. I only got two quick still captures off my pc. I'll post the other still here, but I think it looks the same. Next thing I saw, it flew off to the left.
I wish I had enlarged this yesterday. The head now looks LIGHT to me, Bill? I didn't perceive it this way yesterday...with some black on the face possibly? What do you see? It has a small head, right?

Bill, is it a grey head with a black stripe on the eye area? I can't tell. But the dark facial area doesn't look right for a kestrel, to me. |

I don't know yet what it might be, and the head does seem strangely small I guess with the way it happens to be sitting. I would suggest a bit of caution in interpreting the enlarged images - some of the changes in brightness/darkness as well as the features of the head may either just be due to slightly different lighting angles, and some aspects could also be artifacts of the enlargement. It might be worth asking on nest observations just to see if anyone has any video captured that included the visitor. Usually people post their videos but sometimes if footage doesn't include the eagles or folks don't find it especially interesting, they may not bother to post it. |

Ostrich, I'm not supposed to be watching the PH cam, but heard a Northern flicker which happens to be branching where the visitor was yesterday. I don't see how it could possibly have been a Peregrine and withdraw that wild guess. The visitor's torso is more in line with this Flicker's size, and they are not the right size for a Peregrine. I'm not counting the tail, only torso image. And visitor's head is smaller in proportion to body than the Flicker, it appears. JanT is right about the visitor's yellow feet, but I don't know what it is. It doesn't look right for a kestrel, but the size is better for a kestrel (when compared next to a Flicker.) |

Bill, do raptor species have the same type of oil gland that some other birds (such as waterfowl) do which is spread amongst the feathers to provide waterproofing? Certainly we have seen many times on the various nests the parents providing themselves as "umbrellas" to shield young eaglets from wet conditions, and they seem to be completely unaffected by it. |

Regarding the unidentified bird - I'm going out on a limb suggesting it, but it could not by any remote chance be an immature Eurasian kestrel could it? Unfortunately to me the only things we can really see reliably are the breast, overall shape when perching with wings folded, and tail. I thought there had been (rare) reported sightings of the Eurasian kestrel in California mentioned somewhere? The Eurasian kestrel is supposed to be significantly larger overall than the regular American kestrel, and have a longer tail as well. The length and narrow shape of the tail I think is one of the best things we have to go on on this one - it is certainly way longer than any peregrine drawings I have. |
