The dangling legs is seen just moments before a strike. Because many of the RT prey are on the ground (mammals, reptiles, amphibians) the bird would need to be even more skilled if a stoop was used like is done for striking flying birds. Even with striking flying prey the raptor must have room to pull out of the stoop before hitting a solid surface. The closer the prey is to the ground the more the raptor must adjust the stoop. Buteos usually stoop, if possible, with the plan to gain speed but also come in to the ground some distance from the prey and then stealth along the terrain. (Many hawks and owls get killed crossing road using this technique). Then when the hawk (owls will do this as well) gets above the prey's location they will dive at it and thrust their feet out or drop feet first by lifting the wings in a very steep "V' so gravity causes them to fall. Bill :D

Bill, I've recently had the chance to observe quite a number of Osprey, and noticed many of them soaring, high up with dangling feet? Not at all getting ready to strike? I know we probably shouldn't compare Ospreys to Hawks, but I was just wondering what your thoughts were? We also saw them "skimmimg" over the water, actually dragging the tips of their claws on the water surface. So cool to watch!

Great pics everyone, and great ID job Patti and Ostrich!

Ralph was lucky enough to observe a couple of Hawks having fun, and here are some pics. There are 12 pics, so just click on the "next" button.

Bill, if you've looked at the footage of K10's scuffle with the nest intruder, I'm wondering if you had any thoughts on it. K10 had brought a fish to the nest a little while before this, so it looked like the subadult might have been trying to pirate. But I would have thought he/she'd wouldn't have pushed it that far when K10 was vocalizing so strongly at the approach!

It's interesting that K26 did not appear during any of this, as I was wondering whether all of the vocalization was going to attract her too. After the intruder departed it certainly seemed that K10 stood high at the back of the nest almost motionless for a very long period - perhaps trying to visually advertise that he was continuing to assert claim on the nest?

Bea--those are neat photos! Is it a Red-shouldered pair? Real intense rufous color there! So pretty.

Edit: I went into SnagIt and stretched the color intensity--which I guess just means to make it as bright as it naturally is. I didn't add color.

That was my guess Patti, red-shouldered Hawks. I'm sure Bill will let us know if we are right.

Edit: Unfortunately, it was a very cloudy day that day, and everything came out sorta gray. In addition to that, the tree they were in is quite far away, and Ralph used a full zoom on the later pics.

Bea, they're good photos. I can't get a single raptor photo.

I checked Sibley on the Rough-legged and although it's feathered to the toes, the beak is nothing like the Ferruginous, which I have to admit, does have an eagle look because of the beak shape and size. The Rough-legged looks like a hawk.

Patti and Ian, I just came across this posting over in Chat. I had no idea, did you guys? Does that mean Bill will no longer visit this thread? I will try to sign up at his new place tomorrow.

Does anyone know what happened to Raptorman's Classroom that used to be in the Questions thread?  I can't find it anywhere.

We were informed that Raptorman has chosen to move his classroom to a private website or forum. I think it is his dream to have his own place where people will come to learn. He did it once before and I don't know why he abandoned it but apparently he is ready to try it again. We wish him well and we will try to visit it when it is established.

MIB

Here is his new forum...

Oh, No, I forgot to bookmark it! I'll post it as soon as he emails me the address.

Aha, found it....

Or try this one also...

Bea, I have registered at Ask Raptorman. I've only read a few posts, but one of them (older now, of course) was really neat...posted by a Burbank, CA member.

I've emailed Bill and he's fine--just needed a bit more flexibility which maintaining his own forum provides. I'm almost certain he has a Channel Islands Bald Eagle forum there as well as Norfolk (sorry if I have the latter cam wrong--I don't follow other eagle cams.) :blsh:

I hope Bill has time to still visit us and help us here when we're stumped! This thread opened many more doors for me.

Here you go:

Thanks Patti! I'm glad he's okay and excited for him about his own forum. I've only had a chance to glance in there since I only found it last night, but I'll definetly check some more when I get time. And yes, I did see that he has a Forum for the Channel Island Eagles also.

Bea--He emailed that it is basically a time issue now...going back that forum will eat up much of the time he was able to devote to this DB. I need to learn how to navigate around his forum.

How are the Cordon Bleu raptors? It was soooo cold last night--I was worried about them.

They are doing just fine. They amaze me everytime I see them. I'm worried too when it get's cold, but they seem to have adjusted to it quite well. They still come around most every day, and they look healthy. We keep a close eye on them.
Our Sharpie still visits at least 1 to 2 times a week and just hangs out in the front tree. Sometimes half the day :o .
Coop has not been back that we know of, but we have been gone alot lately, so he just might have been there when we weren't home.

I'm still waiting for Bill to approve me to his forum :D . Got the initial e-mail, but not the 2nd that allows me to sign in and post. I'm sure, like you said, he's just busy now. He'll get to me sooner or later :D .

Edit: Just got my account activation e-mail from Bill :**:

Bea, I think your food is keeping the CB raptors healthy.

I'm sure Bill will get back to you soon! I'm getting the hang of it a little better when I went in there a while ago. I have no idea where I read that interesting post the other night...by the Burbank woman.

My neighbor up the hill with a better view of raptors than I have came over very excited over a week ago....said he saw a smaller bird he had never seen here before. Said it was fast. I got out my Sibley for him and we were outdoors in good light looking at it. He picked the Peregrine falcon. He remembered the wings and made a drawing for us.

Bea, would I not see White-tailed kites here in our neighborhood because they prefer to be near water? I know you've seen them and Peppermint, Sara, etc., saw one or more at Lake Cachuma last Sunday.

I think Coop will show up again---they like your yard.

Patti, I do see some white-tailed kites at Lake Casitas, however, I see alot more driving thru the agricultural fields in Oxnard/Camarillo. Along Las Posas Road going towards HWY 1. I see them hovering over the fields. Looking for field mice no doubt. I don't think they necessarily are close to water, although I know there are some reservoirs for the farmers along Las Posas also? Bill, do kites need water close by?
I have not seen any in our neighborhood at all.

Bill just sent me my activation e-mail. Maybe we should ask him over there :D
