Patti, I just saw this. I'm glad to hear you have been seeing some hawks, as it has been weeks since we saw any. We do hear them sometimes, but both Ralph and I are wondering why they don't come around our place anymore. Last year around this time I seem to remember a lot more hawks flying in our neighborhood.
Also, haven't seen many Turkey Vultures lately. Thank goodness for Nancy's crows, they're still around in numbers

Bea, our friends up the hill have a constant Red-tail hanging out. He watches the RT eating prey on his utility pole. The two I saw flew down to his area after all that calling above my house, then higher up the hill. Maybe it's the same two he sees.

I've figured out why the crows are hanging around mom's tree. Must be Boy's dog food. I heard Spencer died. :(

Oh no :o I had no idea!!! I don't often run into Nancy and haven't talked with her in a while. What happened? And when? Oh man, that sucks. No wonder I haven't heard her call for him anymore... I just thought he was staying inside more. :(

Patti, I was thinking you might want to ask Raptorman about those 2 hawks you observed. I need to check in at his forum again too. Darn Olympics, work and life in general just get's in the way all the time :D

Conejo Valley Aubudon Society -- Sept 6 field trip to SCRE
(This group meets for a field trip every Saturday.)

A mature IWS blue-tagged Bald Eagle and a Peregrine Falcon were sighted on this trip. The first report of the Bald Eagle describes it flying over the group at 11:30 a.m. and I emailed Dee about any I.D. tag. She said they were all so stunned to see it overhead that nobody went for their binoculars. I would expect additional reports from this great group of birders on more Bald Eagle sightings. I have read of other Bald Eagle sightings off their digests.

:soar: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/venturacobirding/message/2883 :soar:

P.S. to Bea: I'm seeing what appears to be the same pair of Red-tail hawks still around and about. One of them does the typical call and the other makes a loud chirping noise. Again, this would seem like a relationship situation. I should ask Bill--I'm sure he would know. Both have red tails.

Wingmarker table

Being a fairly new member I have not memorized all the wingmarkers (bling #’s) and names, nests, etc. I have tried to open the link from this web site http://chil.vcoe.org/documents/Eagle%20Sur...0Jan%202008.pdf and I keeping getting “page cannot be found”. Is there another link that would give me this information?

Thank you so much :D

Edit: Sorry I did not change the topic-such a newbie

Where is Conejo Valley relative to the coast? Is it close to Santa Cruz?

Ian, the Conejo Valley is an area between Ventura County and northwestern Los Angeles County.

The Conejo Valley Audubon chapter's membership is primarily from the cities of Oak Park, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Simi Valley, Fillmore, Moorpark, Somis, and Camarillo.

It is definetly close to the ocean and Santa Cruz.

I don't think there is an actual town called Conejo Valley. It's just an area (mostly hills and agricultural lands).

I'm getting interesting email digests on the Yahoo Group Ventura County Birding sightings of a Zone-tailed hawk that has possibly been wintering for several years in Ojai.

I'm not familiar with Ojai streets, but he seems to be appearing around what sounds like the residential area and local parks. So....you lucky local folks, keep your eyes peeled for it. My Sibley says they can fly with Turkey vultures---tail with a white band and a smaller bird---but resembles Turkey vultures.

From the latest digest sighting:

" What caught my eye was a shadow on the ground. I looked up to see that white stripe on the tail. Missing feathers on both wings. What an awesome feeling, watching this bird soar above me. Stoked!

Star, Mira Monte"

Another Ventura County Birding sighting of the Ojai Zone-tailed hawk:

Posted by: "David Roine"
Thu Sep 25, 2008 10:46 am (PDT)

This morning about 10:30 I spotted a Zone-tailed Hawk circling above a
residential area near Vista Hermosa Drive and del Oro Drive in Ojai. I
observed it for about two minutes then it flew east. It had several
feathers missing from both wings. I assume this is the same bird that
has roosted in the area the last several years during fall/winter.

Patti, thank you so much for letting us know about the various bird sightings in our area!! I really appreciate it!! And it's fun, because it makes me be even more aware of the birds while I'm hoping to maybe catch a glimpse of it too!

<::: Just dropping in to bring this thread out of the depths of What are your questions?

At this point in time, it's a basic thread to chat about raptors and not feel like you're dropping in out of nowhere into Daily Chat if you don't normally post there (and are feeling a little awkward/shy about that). What I liked about this thread was basic raptor chat/information didn't become lost in another thread; the same as any other specific topic/thread such as Recipe Exchange and so forth.

Daily Chat is wonderful and diverse, but might not be quite as convenient as this thread for raptor chat. Please post your raptor photos here if you wish to do so, for it's a good home for them. (Or any backyard bird you're trying to I.D.)

There are interesting facts & photos to review here. Long ago, Bill Dove, the member who started this thread, began his own private website and no longer had the time to devote to the CHIL forum. He left us with some good information and a place for raptor chat other than Bald eagles. Just post in Reply and we can begin anew.

Keep in mind, as with any information, even though it is well-presented here, it is not the opinion of the IWS or the administrators of CHIL. Thanks!

(I'll bump this thread from time to time to keep it within view.)

I don't know if the topic has already been discussed...

I think it would be nice if this raptor discussion thread had its own forum, instead of being within the Questions forum. Perhaps in the Comments section at the bottom.

I think I would read & use it more that way. The Questions section seems directed mostly towards IWS & it seems to be confusing to have a raptor chat in that section.

Maybe my suggestion doesn't make much sense, since you're trying to keep all the info in one continuous thread. ??!?

Also, the earth won't stop if this suggestion isn't taken up, either!

sfstucco/Karen--this thread has been buried/inactive for soooo long that it seems isolated, but it was actually fairly humming at one time. For lack of another place to put it, worked ok here. However, I totally agree with you on your point:

"The Questions section seems directed mostly towards IWS & it seems to be confusing to have a raptor chat in that section."

It is confusing, but wasn't at the time it was placed here because Bill Dove was not a moderator. That would explain how it ended up here at all and fit in the best here.

It's still the only place where you know you can find conversation on raptors. It's totally lost in Daily Chat...and I've seen some great stuff posted there...very neat...and deeply buried within daily threads now. It is posted for other purposes in Daily Chat and nothing wrong with that, either, but I would not converse on raptors over there. So...here we are.

Maybe after the holidays, some more thought can be directed to this issue. I agree, it's confusing here, but worked for the purpose Bill began with. Now it's just a loose place to converse and post video and captures.
