Another Ventura County Birding update by Bill Crowe, this time with a great raptor mix...including our local Bald eagles. Linda/ojailala also gets some terrific photos of these Bald eagles and her photos can be found in our Daily Chat thread. Lake Casitas Raptors ~ Bill CroweFri Mar 4, 2011 11:23 Yesterday I went to Lake Casitas to observe the bald eagles. As I was heading to the parking lot I heard the cry of what I believe to be a red-shouldered hawk. I did not see the eagles at first but I did see an immature Cooper's hawk in a tree near the little fishing dock. As I watched the hawk I saw a white-tailed kite patrolling the edge of the lake I will post a pic as soon as they are uploaded. I was sitting at a picnic table near the dock when I saw the eagles heading toward the nest. The mature adult had a stick in it's mouth for the nest. Then both eagles sat at the top of the tree and gave me some really good looks. I well post pics ASAP. I went down to the boat launch by the cafe and saw the cackling goose and the snow goose. The Peregrine falcon then showed up and was angrily circling the dock. I then saw a dead coot that the falcon was protecting from the large number of turkey vultures. I also saw an American Kestral and a small flock of band-tailed pigeons. Good birding Bill Crowe Simi Valley CA Photo by Bill Crowe -- both eagles in this photo ![]() Photo by Bill Crowe

This is a link to another web cam in the Decorah, Louisiana area that a friend led me to yesterday. Don't really know much about the nest except there are 3 eggs in the nest bowl. Both day and night modes are excellent. I was hoping someone here had more information about this nest. http://www.raptorresource.org/falcon_cams/ |

I see that nest cam included in Daily Chat in the Eagleland post, Chuck...and there are other nest cams in Chat too! The cam links are posted in the pinned L*I*N*K*S thread there. Haven't checked there in a long while to see what has been added, but that's a good thread as well. |

Thanks, Patti. There is so much information here that I haven't explored yet, or even knew it existed. |

Bette, you're right. When I received the information it was in arial font so the state looked like la, which I thought was Lousiana, instead of Ia, which would be Iowa. When I searched for the nest I simply put in Decorah nest. I should have done more research. Thank you for setting me straight.

Just did some catching up in reading this thread, so this is a late remark, but... Wow! I didn't know Burrowing Owls would be out on the islands. Patti posted the report about Owls noted on Anacapa. I wonder how they fare /will fare out there. Thanks for your reports, Patti ! |

Maybe it was posted in Chat or somewhere else, but I thought I'd post a 4/5/11 L.A. Times follow-up video story on the male bald eagle that visits the female bald eagle inside the Orange County Zoo (Irvine, CA). Here is the link: LA Times: Shooting video of the wild bald eagle in Irvine |

This caught my eye from the Ventura Co Birding Yahoo Group to which I subscribe: Zone-tailed Hawks at Lake Casitas Posted By: davidroine davidroine Send Email Tue Jan 1, 2013 9:19 pm | Options View Source Use Fixed Width Font Unwrap Lines This morning about 10:30 Becky Oliver and I saw two adult Zone-tailed Hawks over the hillside on the other side of Santa Ana Rd. from the lake. The first one spotted had one or two primary feathers missing from the left wing. It thermalled with a couple of turkey vultures and a White-tailed Kite which briefly attacked it. As the ZT broke off and flew to the north a second ZT came in from the south and thermalled with TVs. It appeared to have all feathers in tact. It then flew off to the south. Other birds of note at Wadleigh Arm: Ross' Goose Northern Harrier two White-tailed Kites Common Merganser American Wigeon Green-winged Teal Bufflehead White Pelican Two Bald Eagles David Roine Becky Oliver Ojai Great photo of Zone-tailed Hawk by Penny Johnson added yesterday--link to here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/venturacobir...ew?prop=eupdate |
