Good Morning!!! Lots of good rain here the last 12 hours...periods of good soaking rains and moments of light showers...with intermittent sunshine thrown in just to brighten the morning.

Ojailala...Have your Sesame Pasta Salad in the works for dinner tonight. I got it all started when I discovered I had no chicken so will substitute tuna...see how that works out.

Anyone ever heard of Boar's Head Sun Dried Tomato Pesto Mayonnaisse? Although I love sliced tomatoes with S&P and a bit of mayonnaise I don't like them in sandwiches. I found this product by accident and use this in sandwiches, instead. It's very mild.

Artsy Mom...Thanks for the Barn Owl pictures and story. That first baby owl is so huge compared to the last one.

Chiquita

One of my faculty made me a nice little card thanking me for all I do for her. That was really sweet, she left it in my mailbox.

I posted this on the nest watch site which was probably wrong, but I've never posted before at either place. Anyway, if anyone is near UCSB and wants to check it out, A-46 was seen in a eucalyptus tree near the East Gate of UCSB this morning. For better directions and updated info, you can go to sbcobirding.com and click on Discussion to see any relevant posts. (Shoot, I hope it's OK to post this site--it's not commercial, but sorry it I'm wrong.)

Panda updates - Squish

Friday, February 6
Over the last week, Xi Lan has urinated twice. I was somewhat surprised to see this, because I don’t remember Mei Lan having any noticeable urine when she was this age. This is not the first time that I have seen urine from Xi Lan; the first time was about a month ago. He must be doing more than just playing in the water bowl! We should be seeing him urinate more frequently as he gets older.

How can I tell that its Xi Lan's urine, you might be asking? Well, there are two ways to distinguish Xi Lan's urine from Lun Lun's urine. The first way is color- it is bright yellow, almost neon in color. That is normally the first indication, but we don't draw our conclusion on color alone. The other characteristic that distinguishes it is the unique odor. I can't really describe the smell, but it is much different than that of the adult giant pandas, and something that I definitely won’t forget.

Well, I hope that this topic didn't gross anyone out too much. For most keepers, urine doesn't bother us much, because it's pretty much a part of our every day life.

Thanks Ian, I thought it was a Perigrin Falcon that nested on the building ledge every year... those red-tailed hawks are everywhere...

There are peregrines that live in NYC - I forget exactly where, I don't think there are any in Central Park. There are some of the high skyscraper ledges that have had nests built on them.

wasnt there one pair who nested on the ledge of some hollywood character's condo brownstone on the upper east side? There was some sort of outcry over the star wanting to disuade them from nesting and finally they relented a few years ago to the public outcry. Cant remember who was whining though
