Hello everybody, On Thursday, Pete and I worked on getting some transmitters/receivers working for the Rattlesnake (RS), Two Harbors (TH) and Twin Rocks (TR) cameras. In the afternoon, I checked the Twin Rocks nest, unfortunately I could not see anything because of all the rain, and I am sure the eagles were sheltered under some branches or somewhere impossible to spot. On Friday, I returned to TR and spotted a sub-adult perched about 100ft. from the TR nest. ![]() I watched it for a while until it flew off closer to me and I was able to ID it. It was K63, the 2006 TH chicks. I got its signal last coming from the mainland coast on mid-February 2007. Here are a couple of pictures of this “new” Catalina resident. Let’s hope it sticks around. ![]() ![]() It was very hard to read but definitely K63! ![]() After a few minutes it flew off and I spotted the two TR adults in the area. They both landed near the nest and remained there until I left. ![]() In the afternoon, I checked on the Middle Ranch pair. Nobody has seen them perched on the pine trees so we have been checking them pretty often. I found K93 flying in the rain so I ran after it and watched him land on a eucalyptus right above me. ![]() He was curious but I was hiding under a bush so was able too get this close. Too bad it was raining though ![]() On Saturday, I went fishing for Pimu and also checked on the MR birds. The male, K93, flew around and eventually met up with the female, A32 and I watched them ride a thermal all the way up in the sky. ![]() Later they came down, flew over the reservoir and went into the Bulrush canyon area. (It always amazes me how pairs are able to coordinate their movements in flight and maneuver identically). ![]() They have been flying on that direction lately and we wonder if maybe they are beginning to build something over there… It will be a while before we get to explore that area since all the gated roads are closed during and after the storms. Meanwhile, we will keep checking the reservoir in case they start using the nest. Cont... |

Since it rained pretty much every day since Thursday, I took advantage of yesterday's sunny day and checked on the Pinnacle Rock (PR), Seal Rocks (SR) and MR eagles. There was nobody at PR but it does looked like the nest has been worked on. ![]() Closer ![]() The MR eagles were not at the reservoir either. I spotted K65, the SR male, on a rock at the beach. He stood there for a while and then flew towards the SR nest canyon and later perched at one of their favorite fishing/roosting spots. ![]() Today, I went to the TR look out at Long Point and watched the TR birds work on their nest and hang out together. The lighting was great so I took a few pictures. I circled the nest on all the pictures ![]() Closer ![]() TR adult working on the nest ![]() ![]() Adult taking off to roost with its mate ![]() TR pair roosting near nest (circled) ![]() I made a short video of these two. (Sorry about the giggling but they are pretty far away.) ![]() Cont... |

Later in the afternoon, I was feeding Pimu, when she started looking up in the air so intently, I knew she had spotted an eagle. I dropped everything and ran out to get the binoculars; sure enough, it was A32. She flew towards the reservoir, met up with her mate and took off for a soar. A32 ![]() A32 and K93. it is nice to know their bond is strong. We really hope this pair breeds. ![]() In another news, K23 was recently spotted in Vancouver. ![]() Closer ![]() I think that is all I have to report this week. Until next Wednesday, Steffani |

Steffani I am always amazed at how you can find those nests that blend in so well with the surrounding rocks! You must truly have eagle eyes! You guys are doing an awesome job and as always - the update is super! Thank you so much for the info and keeping us informed. I'm hoping this is the year for the MR pair

Dear Steffani, Silly me! I would have thought the rain would have had you guys all snug inside the office, catching up on office chores. But there you were, busy out in the rain. Hope you had some hot cocoa waiting for you when you came back... or some soup! Supposed to be pretty rainy this weekend, too. That's interesting about Pimu's reaction to spotting the other eagle. I guess we'll know pretty soon which of the uncommitted couples are going to mate together... won't be too long before some eggs are laid!! Great update! Lauri |

Steffani, you certainly have incredible 'eagle eyes'! How you can see those nests never ceases to amaze me! I appreciate all you do for our eagles, and the hard work locating and identifying them. You're the best. Be careful out there this weekend with all the rain coming our way. |

It's always great to get news of a young eagle who has successfully passed the one year mark and when they come back to their home it's even better. Welcome Home, K63! Hoping for eggs soon from A32 and K93.... Thanks for a great update, Steffani, and for slogging through all the rain to find those wily birds! |

Steffani, thank you for the update, photos, and all the hard work that you, Dr. Sharpe, and the rest of the IWS team do to keep track of the eagles. Cool to read that an IWS eagle was in Vancouver. for A32 and K93, he's been waiting for a family for a long time.Well done to Pimu for her eagle-eyed alertness. Good news about K63, hope he stays close to home now. |
