Because everyone has been on Santa Rosa last week and this week, I decided to come out to cover Santa Cruz Island for a few days. Today I went out to the west end of Santa Cruz to see if the Sauces pair were going to use last year's nest. When I first arrived, female A-02 was perched in some trees a few hundred feet from the nest tree. I circled around behind her on a ridge trying to find a good location for us to put a blind. While searching I saw male A-28 coming up the canyon from the beach. He flew in and landed on a branch above the nest.

About 15 minutes later A-02 joined him on an adjacent branch.

So it looks as if they will be using the same nest this year. Here is a short video of the two at the nest.

As you know, A-46 was seen recently in Santa Barbara. He has now returned to Santa Cruz and we'll continue to track him. I'll update the maps as soon as I get time.

I'll be searching for other pairs as the weather allows. It is supposed to rain a lot starting Friday, so we may be limited it what we can do this tour.

Until next week.

Thanks for that close up view of the Sauces pair B-)) ...and how great to hear that the wandering A46 'bad' boy (according to his namesake Stephen Colbert) is back on Santa Cruz :><: :><: :><:

We are all so appreciative of all the work you and the IWS crew have done to get the cams and equipment ready for this new season. It is going to be a lot of fun watching and I'm sure it will also be very dramatic too. :)^

Thank you so much Dr. Sharpe, as always we appreciate all the updates we get from you and your staff. We were planning on heading up to Sperling Preserve this weekend (just north of UCSB) and look for A46, aka Stephen Colbert, Jr., but fabulous news, he's back home! My brother lives on Klamath Lake, and told me he saw a large bird with blue tags flying over the lake about a month ago or so. Obviously, A46, quite the safe little traveler. Again, thank you so much!
