Eaglepedia Revisited March 5, 2008 All 9,000 species of birds have the same approach to motherhood: every one lays eggs. No bird gives birth to live young. Birds quickly form and lay an egg covered in a protective shell that is then incubated outside the body. Birds developed much greater mobility than a mammal, but at the cost of being unable to carry its growing offspring about in its body. Unlike, say, a dog carrying a litter of puppies. The large size of a egg makes it difficult for the female to retain more than a single one egg at a time - carrying eggs would make flying harder and require more energy. (Bird eggs vary in size from the tiny 0.2 gramme eggs of hummingbirds to the enormous 9 kilogram eggs of the extinct elephant bird.) http://www.pbs.org/lifeofbirds/home/index.html Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate.

HAPPY FRIDAY 13TH ALL Now i hope everyone is lucky today! Ive already spilled salt and opened the umbrella indoors and may go out later looking for a ladder to walk under and a black cat to cross my path. I have a mirror here thats about ready to break too. Seriously, this cant be that unlucky as one year i won $500 on a pick 3 lottery ticket here. |

Some quick things I found interesting in the news today. Peregrine falcons are doing well in NYS. The DEC has reported 67 pairs of falcons in NY and 130 hatchlings were reported in 2008. 20 pairs are right here in NYC. Did one just fly by the window? In other news, we weren’t imagining that the malls seemed busier last month. Retail had a 1% gain in sales in January, the biggest increase in 14 months, go figure! I have to get to work. |
