Lun and Yang's love story on ZA Myspace LOVE, ASSISTED: LUN LUN AND YANG YANG SHE would grow up into what some would someday call a quintessentially beautiful giant panda. HE would grow up to be a handsome fellow known and loved for a goofy streak and a fondness for the smell of Tabasco. Their epic tale has classic beginnings. The story starts in China - at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, to be exact - in 1997. On August 25 was born to Bing Bing a lovely female cub. Nearby, not two weeks later, on September 9, was born to Ya Ya a son, her firstborn. The tiny beings with the intertwined destinies had very different childhoods. Yang Yang spent 13 months in the company of his playful young mother, perhaps even then - or perhaps especially then - developing some of the distinctively goofball tendencies that still characterize him today. (If you've seen the video of juvenile Yang Yang posted on the Cub Updates page on zooatlanta. org yesterday (http://www.zooatlanta.org/animals_giant ... pdates.htm), you get the idea.) Lun Lun, on the other hand, didn't grow up with the same level of maternal supervision that Yang Yang did. (In other words, parents, if your cubs were going to a party at Lun Lun's and you asked whether her mother was home, the answer would have been no.) Lun Lun parted ways from her mother when she was just 4 months old, after which time she was reared among other giant panda cubs who were around her age. Was there electricity when they met? Was it love at first sight? Well, no. Both were still cubs, and playtime was still paramount in the minds of both. (In FACT, not to shatter the hearts of romantics everywhere, but Yang Yang initially preferred to pal around with a set of twins who were also in their play group. He played with Lun Lun sometimes, but she was, at least at first, second-string in comparison with his other playmates. But nothing helps us get to know our companions better than a trip across the world. In 1999, Lun Lun and Yang Yang traveled together to a new home - Zoo Atlanta. Were they in love by the time they arrived? Did anyone carry anyone else over the threshold at the Arthur M. Blank Giant Panda Conservation Center? Well, no. The bears were only 2 years old, and the Zoo was just a new and beautiful place to play. And play they did. They wrestled, they rolled, they splashed in their pool. For Lun Lun and Yang Yang, perhaps, these were the halcyon times ... the salad days. But bears grow up, as does everyone else. And one day our Yang Yang found that Lun Lun, child no more, no longer jumped at the chance to wrestle, roll and splash. In fact, perhaps, to Yang Yang's mind, she had grown quite snarky. His playmate was a young lady now, and whether he knew it or not, he was a young man. Had undying love developed with this gradual transfer to adulthood? Well, no. Now that Lun Lun and Yang Yang had entered the realm of grownups, Zoo staff had begun housing them as solitary bears, as giant pandas would live in the wild. Yang Yang did have opportunities to reunite with his darling. As 2004 became 2005, had perpetual adoration finally kicked in? Well, no ... and after another year without a breakthrough for the Zoo's giant panda pair, science intervened in 2006. On the evening of September 6, 2006, there sat our hero in his dayroom, pounds upon pounds of bamboo dinner scattered casually around him. Did he think about Lun Lun? Perhaps he knew she was somewhere nearby. He always knew when SHE was near. She was the only female in his world. Everything about her was familar to him - her face, her scent, her voice. Suddenly, there WAS a voice. But it wasn't hers. This voice was little, but it was loud. Yang Yang looked up in confusion, snorting in alarm at the unaccustomed sound. Who was THAT?! This was not his Lun Lun. This wasn't ANYONE he knew. This was some strange, shrill creature ... ... and the rest, we know, is history. Happy Valentine's Day, everyone. Bring your sweethearts to meet our sweethearts this weekend! And stay tuned for the rest of February as Zoo Atlanta Love Stories continues. |

Peetie Does Silvie use the litter box when he goes #2 or does he go where ever he can. The reason why I'm asking is: If he goes poo poo in the littler box and no where else, then I see no reason why he can't come home with you. I used to work for a vet and as long as they use the litter box its ok. I think if you took a sample of his feces to your vet maybe he can diagnose it better than the asylum. (no offense to the asylum) Most of the time it has something to do with what kind of food he is eating. He could have a sensative stomach which would require special food from your vet. Just thought I'd give you some ideas If I were you, I would get a sample and take it to your vet to test

Peetie, Happy Valentine's Day! I was wondering if your vet would be willing to call the vet who is treating your kitty, and get the official info on what is going on. Your vet would probably be much better at filling you in on the details and give you his opinion. |

I came into the nest watching late last year so am looking for someone who can remember back to last year at this time, me I'm lucky to remember 5 minutes ago. Was the WE nest this incomplete at this time last year? From reading the calendar from last year it seems like it should only be a couple of weeks before an egg. They seem to be keeping house like me, in other words not much at all, there is always tomorrow after all. But I am getting worried that there is no way that nest will be ready for chicks anytime soon. So if you remember what the nest looked like at this time last year I would love to hear.
