Topa - I had my kids in swimming lessons early..around 2-3 years of age. It's not a guarantee, but it sure helped ease my mind having my kids around water. My parents had a beach cabin right on the water, so it really was essential.

Harpo - It's always interesting to hear how schools are in other areas. Our kids attend from the week before Labor day to around the 2nd week in June...everyone here is always complaining about how many days off they have during the year....but they all attend 180 days per year...it just seems like they have days off all the time!

I did too Paula - off to the Y for beginning swimming - I wanted them to at least not be afraid of the water but to also have the basics..... they both continued with lessons later for a few years at the local pool. It only takes a moment for a little one to slip away ....

A little 4 year old boy drowned at our lake yesterday... someone last saw him feeding ducks on a dock...

I need that kind of news with a little cream and sugar! :(
After I gathered myself, I emailed DIL and asked if she would have the grandkids take swimming lessons at the YMCA, at my expense. They were just at the Kenar Resort that is on a lake with docks too. I just said if they ever fell in the water it would be good to know how to save themselves. :(

Terrible news to hear, but we can all learn from this. :(

Good idea, Cathy. When my son was 9-months old, he & I took 'Mommy & Me' swimming classes at the Y. One of the things they taught him, was what to do if he fell in the pool.....i.e. hold his breath, use his hands and feet to get his head above water, and how to reach for something to pull himself up on....and, of course, how to swim. By the time he was a year old, he could swim the length of the pool at our apt. complex.

We are just casually chatting about our trip in chat and shooting ideas ouit there to one another. All the major stuff will not be done in the forum anyway. starting a whole different chat line is not something I am interested in doing since it really is not a Cruzer event. Thank yuou anyways!

Come on over to the IWS Eagle forum and chat about Ireland with me.
I love to travel, even if only in my mind..I'll post pictures for you. :D

Heading into the office.

See you there.

Swimming lessons, I know for someone raising their children in the city like DIL, She might not think that swimming is important. That's why I had to send the email to her..

OK, really leaving...

Hello Cruzers :}^

WOW!! I have not been on in for soooo long. Been busy with work and just can't find the time to spend on the forum. When i do get on, it takes forever to catch up. For crying out loud, im retired, so why can't i retire??? Hummmm

So sad to read about that little 4 yr old and you are so correct, it can happen in an instant.

I have been trying to incourage a friend of mine ( we also share a grandson-Jaimen) to join the forum. Maybe soon..

I have tried in the past not to interfere in my grandkids life but the one issue I asked my children was to enrol them in swimming. They all did and realized what an important thing it was. The kids also enjoyed it and the youngest ones are still taking lessons. It is a small preventive measure to take but little kids should never be left unattended at a pool or lake even if they can swim well, trouble can happen anywhere.

here in the philly area, schools ALWAYS start a few days after the Labor Day holiday which is considered by many the official end of summer. All the attractions along the jersey shore close down as many of them are staffed by students including the various communities "beach patrols". The madness of the holiday rush "down da sure" over the memorial day and labor day holidays from philly are lengendary. Personally, i never liked it memorial day weekend as the water was still cold and many times rainy. Even so , like its a mandatory obligation folks stream over to jersey.

Schools here seem to end usually the first or second week in june with week breaks for Chirstmass/New year and for easter week. Still they manage to get hte starte mandated 180 days of education in.

Other oddity too. If there is to be snow expected and still permits busses to roll to take the kids to school despite bad conditions for later in the day, they will often dismiss the kids early at noon which even though for grade school kids is only 3 hours of instruction it is conisdered a full day as part of the 180.

I'm baaaaaaaackk! And had a GREAT time! That place we stayed at was AWESOME! A lot of attention to detail and with a name like Eaglenest it was just perfect  Our room had a private parking place with a private entrance right to our room, a private patio with a jacuzzi (was too cold out to use it but Jim did once but I am a wimp in the cold LOL!). The place is a 4 bedroom house that they turned into a bed and breakfast. It had 3 bedrooms and a full pantry downstairs and upstairs was the other bedroom, a living room, dining room, full kitchen and a breakfast nook. There was a deck off the living room that looked out to a beautiful view of the mountains. The owners have 2 beautiful golden retrievers that run out to greet you when you get there. They man showed us around our room and explained everything we needed to know. We had full use of the pantry. The lady had set out 2 plates of caramel apple pie with pecans and there was ice cream in the pantry fridge for us. There were sodas, water, microwave popcorn, hot chocolate for you to help yourself. They had board games, videos, dvds for your use. The bathrooms had homemade glycerin soaps that they put fresh in when they made up the rooms everyday. There was a gas fireplace in our room and on top was wine glasses, tea cups, a little jar of decaf, French vanilla and reg. coffee as well as tea bags and sweetner and of course, an automatic coffee maker.

Breakfast was at 9 every morning and the man is a swiss trained chef so the food was incredible! Lots of fresh berry sauces, fresh squeezed OJ, fruits, homemade wheat pancakes, Kielbasa, eggs with ham, bell peppers and onions, fresh banana nut muffins, fruit parfait with fresh whipped cream...and there was tea and coffee if you wanted. You sat with the other couples in the dining room and were served. Very friendly and sooooo yummy! Today he made something called a Dutch Baby...its sort of like a Dutch pancake that gets all fluffed up and you put stuff on it like he had a strawberry, blackberry sauce made with fresh berries, cinnamon baked apple slices or fresh mixed fruit. Or you could have it all

Friday afternoon it snowed pretty good and all night long so it was nice and white on Sat. It was so beautiful! Very cold outside but our room actually got too hot and I had to open the sliding door for a bit  Being a So Cali girl and boy we have not experienced much in the actual snowing dept. Have been to the snow in the mts but not been there when it actually snowed so it was exciting for us.

One of the couples staying there got engaged Fri. night while out on their horse and buggy ride! He didn't want to do it on Valentine's Day cause he said it was so cliche  So he did it Fri. the 13th. Then about 20 mins. later someone in a truck rearended their buggy and flipped it on its side! The horse got freed and took off running. They found it not far from its home but it had a gash in its leg :( They had to truck it down to Fallbrook to a good vet there. It is going to be fine but its a nasty gash. The bugger driver was not physically hurt but his buggy, which is his business, was pretty messed up. And this was a busy weekend for him. He was trying to find another buggy and horse to use but not sure if he did. Thing is the guy that hit him was a local so he knows about the buggies around town! He was following too closely and was going to fast. The road was wet with the snow and he didn't stop in time. The passengers were not seriously hurt but the girl has a bruised back.

We drove to Lake Henshaw and took pics Sat. and Sun. to Lake Cuyamaca where there was LOTS of snow. And Jim was great about stopping for me to take pics when I wanted  Supposedly there is an eagle's nest at Lake Henshaw but we didn't see it or any eagles. Saw lots of hawks but could only get a couple pics of the same one. Saw one on the way home real close to the road on a fence post but there was nowhere to turn around to go back for pics and it was pouring rain with some traffic so wouldn't have been safe, either. It looked like a Kestral but was huge. Not sure how big Kestrals can get but this was a big bird. Am working on a slideshow of pics so when its ready I will post it. I missed being here and have to get caught up on reading tho not sure I will  Hope everyone had a great wknd! I sure did!

george my understanding is part of the reason they used to do 1 or 2 hour delays when my kids were in school (bus - rural school setting) they needed so many hours of attendance each day to get the 180 and to get their funding/subsidies and not to have make up/snow days!

when I was working - those 2 hr. delays were killers!
