Topa, swimming lessons are a great gift to give your grandkids !!!

Harpo... On the cheese 'roll'.. I would have layed my wooden carrier down flat and lined up my four cheese rolls and then pushed and pulled it to the bottom... I don't think the participants understood what they could and could not do... rofl rofl

I just made 3 dozen enchiladas.. some for parents and the kids are coming for dinner... after this weekend and 51 people... this was a piece of cake... :bday:

Julie - along that same line - in scouting you swim with a buddy at all times! and in NYS you hike with a buddy - 2 young scouts were at the lake front working on fishing merit badge - one had a seizure / the scout with him pulled the young man out of and away from the water's edge and ran for help - saving his life for sure. The buddy system is the only way - for young and old! :)^

Lala the one couple pretty much did that - how clever were they! rofl but I'm still laughing at the whole scenario..........

we're meeting friends for dinner in about 1/2 hr. and we have to pick - eegads - I'm all about Mexican but not sure the one can comfortably tolerate it so.......where to go where to go...... they love BBQ but we had that over the weekend so........ don't really want to go there again.... hmmmmmmm

Hi Everybody!! I used to be a water safety instructor, life guard, & swimteam coach. I can't tell you how much it saddens me and at the same time, infuriates me to hear of a young child (or anyone for that matter) drowning. Learning how to swim should be mandatory for both children and adults. You wouldn't believe how many adults DO NOT know how to swim. And while I think knowing how to swim, not being afraid of water, and having a healthy respect for it is a wonderful thing, no one (young or older) should really go swimming unsupervised or by themselves. Even the most accomplished swimmer can have problems. Something else that people take for granted is the false sense of security that adults sometimes have when their children pass those swimming classes. As the saying goes: People (Children) drown without a sound!

Stepping down from my soapbox :BX:

I agree there! The Red cross always teaches folks never to swim alone because anything can happen. It makes no difference whether the water is 3" or 30' you can drown in a bathtub if something happens.

Given the new photo tip thread our mods have given us, I took the liberty of posting a bird photography tips page for those interested. It is relatively basic common sense but often we never think of it til we miss "that shot" :clk:

My boys are 15 and 16 now, both had several years of lessons. Oldest will never not panic in water over his head, youngest like a fish.
Remember when youngest was less than two, I was visiting a friend one morning who had a camp on a lake. We were sitting on dock, my friend on a lawn chair, my little guy on a kiddie lawn chair, and myself on a lawn chair on the other side of him. All three chairs were in a line and touching each other. We each had a hand on his chair and were talking over his head. Next thing we knew, there he was laying on the bottom of the lake with big blue eyes looking up at us. Luckily the water was only about 2 feet deep and while it seemed like forever it was in actuality a 5 second incident as we both instantly leaned over and grabbed him by his oshkosh overalls and hauled him out. He thought it was great fun. Gee I wonder why my hair is so gray? To this day when we get together we talk about how he could have slipped into the water, literally under our nose .

Well, we made it back in one piece thanks to the fact it had stopped raining except for some sprinkles on the way home. Passed by several accidents including one where part of the car was on the railing to the left and the rest of it was on the right hand side completely straddling the right lane but horizontal to the oncoming traffic :8O: Must have happened just before we arrived at that spot, although no one was in the vehicle. There was a lot of water on the road at the time.

Took Siobhan to the park when we got home and made it back inside just before another heavy down pour of :rn: and now the sun is shining

It is so sad to read that the little boy drowned at the Lake. I'm sure the circumstances will come out as to the reason he was there on the dock by himself. The family is probably just devastated and will remain so for the rest of their lives :'( :'( :'(

Ian, you will be interested in this because it involves poker. We have a friend from Winnipeg who has been playing poker in the LA Poker Classic at the Commerce Casino. He has been playing in a no limit hold'em poker tournament since last Thursday.

He has now advanced to the final 18 and they will be playing again starting at 4:00 PM today. He was still playing up until 2:00 AM this morning. He is playing against some of the top poker players in NA and was so happy to make the final cut. He had to change his flight home as he didn't expect to be in the finals  If he finishes in the top three he will get either $30,000, $40,000 or the top prize of $50,000.

We hope he places in the money because then he is taking us out to dinner on the town. :)^ We had a mini tour of the casino today and what an absolute mad house. There is poker, poker, and more poker going on everywhere in that place. All kinds of entry levels too.

Being non players, it was quite something for us to have all the scenarios explained to us. :D
We will continue to be just watchers, not players....it's really a very stressful and brutal game, especially when you are playing against people who have no fear of losing large amounts of money :o
