Hi everybody, We have great news this week! The Two Harbors (TH) female laid the very first egg of the season yesterday afternoon! We expect the second one to be laid in a day or so. The West End (WE) female will probably lay in the next few days as well. We have been trying to check the rest of the nest at least a couple of times a week but we have been limited as to where we can travel on the island due to the heavy storms we have had. I checked twin Rocks yesterday and found one of the adults on the nest. ![]() ![]() It was sunny for a little while ![]() I watched it for a few minutes until the other one showed up. ![]() Lately, there always seems to be one of the adults present on the nest. Since our view is limited from this observation point, we cannot be sure that they have laid an egg or not. I will be checking on them again tomorrow. We have been checking The Middle Ranch (MR) and Rattlesnake (RS) birds almost daily since their territories are just off the road but unfortunately we have not seen any nesting activity at either one of the sites. Yesterday, I surveyed all around the reservoir looking for the MR birds and possible new nest locations. This is the nest we built ![]() A closer look. We have not seen the birds visit this nest or perch on these trees for al least a couple of weeks. ![]() I hiked the ridge between Middle and Bulrush canyon, where we have seen the birds sometimes fly to. I finally found A32 perched on an oak at the very top of the ridge. She saw me and took off so I missed my chance of a getting a close up of her. The other side of Middle Canyon ![]() A-32 flying over the reservoir. ![]() I couple of weeks ago I mentioned I found the MR male, K-93, spending some time on a eucalyptus tree on the other side of the reservoir. ![]() Pete noticed that they might have started building a nest here but we are not sure how long ago. Here is a close up. ![]() Since their territory is right behind the captive eagle enclosure, we will check the reservoir every day until we find out what is going on wit this pair. I checked Pinnacle Rock (PR) on Saturday but the birds were not around. Today, I visited them again and found K-56 on the nest. ![]() ![]() ![]() Cont... |

In the afternoon, Pete and I went to the Seal Rocks (SR) area to look for the birds from two different locations. We watched the male, K-25, fly back and forth along the coast for several minutes. ![]() He perched a couple of times and kept on circling the area. ![]() We can tell them apart because he has lost his right wing marker. ![]() The female showed up eventually. ![]() The male came to her and they perched side by side. ![]() They kept vocalizing until the male took off suddenly like going after something. Soon the female took off too. ![]() They were chasing off a juvenile eagle that we could not identify. Neither Pete or I had a good look at it, and while Pete saw something white on the back of the bird that could have been a radio pack, it did not seem to have wing markers. Being such a young bird it would be unlikely that they would have fallen off or faded out so quickly. It is possible to find unmarked youngsters or even adults that either live (“secretly”) on the island or come from the mainland. The male disappeared after the chase and the young bird flew pass the Seal Beach area and did not come back. The female returned to the nest area and perched a few hundred feet below me. ![]() Closer ![]() She has lost her left wing marker and the right wing marker has partially fallen off too. ![]() Pete checked the RS nest but no activity there yet. I will probably go to TR and RS tomorrow while Pete checks SR and PR again. Pimu has refused to come down to the perches to eat for three days now. She has a couple of extra pounds on her so she can afford to be indifferent to me and to the food I offer to her. I bet she will eat tomorrow! Pee ech had almost a hundred visitors last Thursday. A large group of Fish & Wildlife Service members were on a Catalina tour so I gave them a short presentation on the eagle project and our captive birds. I had him out on a perch but he decided he was more comfortable on the ground. Sorry, no pictures but there were a lot of people with cameras that day, maybe somebody will e-mail me one. We were supposed to give an educational program on Saturday but it got cancelled due to the weather. It was postponed for March 14th. I think that is all I have to report this time. Steffani |

Dear Steffani, What a great update! Thanks for all the great shots and information. Hope Pimu starts eating soon... maybe the stormy weather has been bothering her. Well, she has a few more days before the next rain is predicted. Exciting news about the TH egg... looking forward to a bumper crop of new eaglets this spring! Thanks again to you and Pete for all you do for the birds. You guys sure get your exercise with all the climbing and hiking you do on the island. Lauri |

The certainly haven’t been visiting their old one but we haven’t seen them carrying nest material anywhere else either. We will watch them more closely this week and we’ll see. |

Thank you Steffani, for this great, great update and super pictures!! I also think Pimu is distracted by the weather. Or could it be that the large group of people there to see Pee 'ech got her upset? (If they were anywhere close to her I mean?) Thank you again for a great report, and I hope someone will send you some pictures of your presentation with Pee'ech and you'll share them with us
