Eaglepedia Revisited:

April 26, 2007

Dead branches/sticks are used in the construction of the nest, being the bulk of the building material but live branches are delivered in the summer which are believed to possibly maintain the pair bond or to inhibit parasites of the nestlings, cleaning the nest. Rotting fish carcasses, filled with maggots accumulate in the nest as food is brought to feed the young. The only form of nest santiation appears to be burial of the waste under large quantities of grass, moss and other greenery. Perhaps eagles do not simply toss old fish over the edge because that might attract mammalian scavengers that could be predators of the eaglets. When the adults are at the nest and not brooding or feeding the chicks, they spend time arranging sticks and digging in the nest, reaching deep into the grassy mat, pulling out and shaking a huge mouthful of vegetation. This may be observed for several minutes and possibly several times a day. The adults can accidentally or perhaps even deliberately, ingest some of the nest material which is later cast up in a pellet. The digging may also assist in keeping the nest clean, inhibiting larvae that parasitize the eaglets or it may dry out the grasses in the nest and improve the insulating properties.

On Fri we got to meet our new executive director at the NEC. I had 3 nests up on the computer plus the nest obs forum so that I can check on things while I'm there. I've even had my own personal computer with the cams on in my program so people could watch.

There's been talk about linking the cams to the NEC website and he's very interested in this. He hasn't officially started yet. He was just there to observe and he watched the cams for awhile.

Also I have that picture there now of 46 (Steven Colbert Jr.) and there is always somebody in the program that knows about this eagle so they're happy to see how he's growing up.

I'd like to say HI to anyone new who signed up or is lurking that learned about this website thru the NEC program. Welcome.
