Cheryl - Joanie is right...your's and mine are juvies

An adult has

White crown stripe.
Black plume extending from behind eye to off the back of the neck.
Shaggy feathers on neck and back.

Yes.... but.... that describes the adult in full breeding plumage.... in November you see the 'no frills' version ... the males strut their stuff here at the marina (which is in an ecological reserve) and both genders and the juvies 'fish' in the mud at low tide and annoy boaters with messy 'calling cards' left behind on their newly washed boats ... there is a pretty sizable resident flock here at the wetlands.

Lala - I like your heron pics too. In Fact, I never knew herons even flew into and nested in trees till I saw one at Blackwater 2 years ago...and now they have the heron cam in Washington State....lots of herons nest together too. They are such a pretty bird!

There is a large heron colony in Beacon Hill Park in Victoria BC where a bald eagle made regular forays into the nests there raiding the eggs and the chicks in the summer of 2007. People were very concerned that the birds would abandon the rookery because of that eagle nicknamed 'Bridezilla'. She was responsible for chasing away more than 100 nesting herons. :o Here she is standing in an empty heron's nest. Click pic for story.

This eagle looks more like a male to me because of the extra long skinny legs :D

Oh My Goodness Penny!! Hard to believe one eagle could cause such havoc and sadness for the blue heron colony--but since Birdzilla seemed to be acting alone, seems that is what he/she did. Nature is harsh as well as beautiful.

Thank you for the interesting and very surprising story.

What's odd is that I took some pictures of a rookery in a line of trees near the Vancouver ferry terminal which also had an active eagle's nest in it (there were a couple of eaglets still in the tree) and those eagles didn't bother the herons at all.
