JoJo, beautiful Great Horned Owl today... was he out in the middle of the day like that?  would love to see him and that hummer nest.. how did you ever find it in the huge forest???  :clk:  :)^  :clk:  :)^

Yes, the owls hang out there during the day. However I have not seen them the last few times I have visited.

The hummingbird is another story. I was with a few friends looking for the owls. The hummer was making a fuss, so I guessed there was a nest near by. I stood very still and waited. Eventually she landed on her nest. As long as we didn't make any large or sudden movements, she stayed put.
I went back between the rain storms to look around and found the nest tipped to the side. Thinking to find broken eggs or dead chicks, I looked under the nest. But there was a live, breathing chick!! :^: Nothing but pin feathers to keep it warm.
I picked it up and carried it back to the car. I have clean rags in my trunk and used those to make a 'nest'. Then made a few phone calls to find the Wildlife Network in Goleta. They have a few volunteers who foster hummingbirds. I checked the next day and my chick was doing fine.
I will call them this week to check on the chick's progress. Should have ^"^ by now.

Please note that the owl and hummer photos are by my friend John Wiley. The mushroom photos are mine.

Linda, do you ever go to the see/photograph the monarchs? My camera is insufficient to capture any of their beauty.

JoJo, my friend and I were planning on going to Sperling Preserve this weekend to see the butterflies. Thanks for letting me know, we missed it! Next fall, we're there with the beautiful monarchs. Your pics of the owls were fabulous! Thanks so much for sharing your great day!
