Eaglepedia Revisited:

January 8, 2008

The bald eagle picks up broken sticks from the ground, and sometimes breaks branches off trees. They naturally take as many sticks as they can find close to the nest, but may lug some branches as far as a mile, carrying them in their talons. They usually start building in the top quarter of the tree, below the crown, near the trunk, where branches are thick and strong enough to support the heavy nest.

They interweave the sticks, and fill in spaces with grasses, mosses, cornstalks, Spanish moss, and other fibers. Looking at an eagle's nest, it's hard to understand why eggs don't get cracked or babies don't get poked by the sharp sticks. To soften the bottom, parents collect grasses and soft materials.

There's really no reason being the world's cutest panda cub shouldn't work out for Xi Lan, but if it doesn't at least we now know that walking the highwire is not in his future.

The purple flowers are :

Fiesta Flowers
A sprawling annual with recurved prickels on the stems,
it clings to nearby vegetation for it's support,
as well as to clothing of unsuspecting hikers.
It has an interesting deeply lobed leaf with a
widely winged stem that expands at the base
to reach around and clasp the central stem.

Minimum Day at school today which means nothing to us except that we get the kids looooooonnnnger today  Makes the day draaaagg! Wish I could call in sick but that wouldn't be nice. No subs so my boss (and best friend) would be alone most of the day with allllll those kids (approx. 70) and I wouldn't do that to her. Well, better go get fortified and dressed  Oh coffee!! Where are you??? *drags self away from computer reluctantly*
