Hello everyone, I have a lot to share about our first full tour out on Santa Cruz Island. Suzanne, David and I went to as many of the territories where we know there has been a pair of Bald Eagles (BAEA) on Santa Cruz Island except for two, one of which is the Pelican Harbor Pair. Luckily we have all the dedicated nest-cam watchers who provide us with some of the most amazing data regarding their progress this breeding season. Thanks to all who take the time to post their notes, photographs and videos. Early in the week we watched the Sauces nest because we knew that they returned to work on that nest this year. Last tour Dr. Peter Sharpe went out to the nest site and found them renovating the nest. David, Suzanne and I also found them working on the nest and working on the bowl. David was able to get these photographs of both A-28 and A-02 at the nest. .The following day on our way to the Sauces nest, Suzanne and I were able to identify a sub-adult BAEA flying over the eastern portion of Santa Cruz Island. It was the famous A-46 which has just returned recently from an amazing voyage up into Oregon this winter. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Previously this year Dr. Peter Sharpe spotted two adult BAEA out on the very western end of Santa Cruz Island during a boat ride out to the islands on the National Park Service Road. While surveying the western end Dave, Suzanne and I were able to get close enough to identify both the Bald Eagles. Both were perched just below the cliffs and we were able to sneak up real close before they could see us. We were able to identify them by their wing tags and both were released on Santa Cruz Island. A-24 is a female released in 2004 and she was last seen out in the same location in December of 2008. The male A-40 was released in 2005 and he was last seen in November of 2008 on Santa Rosa Island. Once they noticed our presence A-40 flew out over the water and A-24 remained perched and did not know why A-40 flew off. I got a photograph of him perched below the rock cliffs. ![]() A-40 flew off and I got some photographs of her flying out over the ocean. ![]() ![]() ![]() A-24 followed behind her, caught up with her and they both flew south and perched on the bluffs of Fraser Point. ![]() ![]() Later in the week we surveyed the north shore of Santa Cruz Island in hopes of finding the Cueva Valdez Pair. About mid day we found the pair both perched in their favorite perch tree overlooking the ocean. ![]() We had short visuals of the Yellow Banks Pair but without any luck finding any nest. A-49 is still on the west end of Santa Rosa and hopefully Amanda will have a chance to survey that area and get a visual on her. Well that’s the beginning of the season for us and we hope to find several new nests this year. We have a lot of ground to cover but the new crew members are ready. This tour Stephani Jijon is out on Santa Cruz Island and will be helping Stephanie Eyes and her crew. Till next time happy eagling! Cedrick, Suzanne and Dave |

Cedrick, Suzanne & Dave - Thank you so much for your update. What great news seeing all the eagles. Your photos are beautiful. Can't wait until someone gets a visual of A-49. Does anyone ever let Steve Colbert know the whereabouts of his son A-46, Stephen Jr? |

In a previous update it was mentioned that A-49's transmitter might have fallen off or malfunctioned based on some garbage data being received - if she is known to be on Santa Rosa as mentioned above but not sighted, does that mean her transmitter is working again? |

Dear Cedrick, Dave and Suzanne, Wow, what a great report! Some fabulous photos, too. Thanks for bringing us up to date on all the "kids"-- it's just breathtaking to see those photos of them soaring over the blue ocean. I am REALLY jealous of all of you! Thanks for putting together the report and the photos to keep us armchair watchers in the loop. Lauri |

Wonderful update. A46 is not quite 3 yet and showing some white on his head. I guess Cruz would be about the same. A28 and A40 seem to be an exciting pair. This also seems to be an exciting time or is it eggcitable? Happy Week. Vickih |
