Octomom has gotten rid of her publicist also. There are too many screws missing to be making full contact there. It worries me that the baby could be taken out of the hospital. Here we have our own kind of wing blings in order to even see the new baby. You can't even go down the hall with the baby with out huge alarms going off. Jann thanks a lot again for that sig alert link....Paul called a little bit ago and said he was sitting on 118 not moving. Yup I found it on sig alert and told him what was up....I felt pretty smart!!! |

NOTE:This question has come up several times in the past week so just as a reminder: If you "won" a pre-fostering tour or regular IWS tour last year when you contributed to the 2008 Nest Adoption Challenge and if you have not yet confirmed your tour date - which can be any time that the IWS staff is available and you are available - when you know the time period that you want to claim your "prize" email Peter (Dr. Sharpe) at Sharpe@IWS.org or call the office at: 310-510-2728 he will work with you to confirm your tour reservation NOTE: I do not know where your tour will take you and what you will be able to see - eggs are at a couple nests now - - chicks would be on the nests from first of April (?) and for a 3 month period until they fledge - you can speak to Peter about specifics when you are making your arrangements and he can best advise you. you can take your tour most any time during the year when staff is available to escort you! |

Just got home. Wow Linda! What a great shot. How close do you get to the flower with a macro lens?? Look! The little bug is waving!

Linda, when we got home at about 7:30, there was a beautiful light orange crescent moon and to the right (I think) was the space station, or a VERY bright star! Hope you are still on and can check it out. Pictures! |

Hey George, maybe you can get a bystander take a quick photo of you and Cricket! Or you can each take one of the other... |

This is the major problem with macro photography. At such a short distance to the subject, you have very very little depth of field. Which is where often a tripod can be an essential tool even for an immobile subject to allow you to stop the lens down to f22 or even smaller to maximize the range of focus covered in the frame of your shots. With moving subjects its not that easy and can be quite frustrating until we get that one attempt of many just right. Trust me, ive attempted shots that resulted in many many naughty words said while taking each frame of many until i got one that i liked. In the old days many lenses had a focusing scale on the lens itself with has marks on either side of a central mark indicating the various f stops and when you focused the lens the central hash mark showed the distance your lens was focused at and on either side the various distances within that the apeture setting had in focus. obviously as theg apeture went up the mark increased in distance from the focusing mark showing a broader range of area in focus HOWEVER...when focusing on an object close in even fully stopped down the range in focus wont be in feet but often in inches instead or even lower distances EDIT: for some "purists" they refer to macro as being a reproduction ratio of 1:1 or greater on the exposure plane (film or digital sensor) or "Lifesize" while others call any extreme close up of a part of an object macro Personally i have found that when shooting macro, i prefer using the apeture priority metering mode as opposed to shutter priority so as to be able to have better control over the depth of field that covers the subject the way i want it to be and where i want it to be tack sharp in focus (just a tip fwiw. Playing with such things is how we learn and also we get a lightbulb over us that suggests we try some variation of a method to anohter shot of a similar subject under similar conditions |
