YES! kickign self for not mentioning manual focusing for close up macro. Also use the depth of field preview button too to show what is in focus when the lens stops down.  If you can see thru the dimmer finder that is/

I will try to unearth a write up on depth of field to post over in the photo thread board if i can find it and if i remember

I've been reading through the 40D manual trying to understand what all the controls do, and I noticed there is a depth of field preview button - I'll have to look at that and see what it does.

well, if your shooting f stop is set to anything other than your maximum apeture when you push the button in the view you see thru the viewfinder will darken to show what is actually passing thru to the sensor and what is or isnt in focus at the distance you are focusing at

immagine focusing on the 5th traffic cone in a row of traffic cones. wide open you may have that and only that cone sharp and in focus. Stop down a couple of stops d hit the preview button and you will see it darker thru the finder but you will not only see the 5th cone but also the 4th and 6th as well in focus. Stop down to your minimum apeture and do the preview again and you see even more cones in the row in focus than just the fifth one perhaps the 2,3,4,5 ,6 and 7 cones.

This is another bad example of depth of field and how it increases when you decrease the apeture of the lens. There are all sorts of examples that ive seen to show depth of field but almost anything showing a line of objects, posts, cars etc to show a difference in focus as one increases or decrease the f stop to show more or less of them in focus

edited: here is a brief page on depth of field with examples and an explaination better than what i have been trying to give (i hope)
example and description of depth of field

I shall try, but i will not shoot photos of anyone without their permission so itwill only be with her permission. I am not sure however that i will be able to be in any shots myself. Aside from being president of P.O.O.P.S. (The Photo Optical Objectives Preservation Society) whose mission is to save fine optics from shattering by not looking into their front elements, I never let anyone handle my equipment. It isnt necessarily a lack of trust but more so like a mechanic who never wants to lend out his precious tools to others, even if they are in the same auto repair shop. It is sort of a superstition i suppose.
Of course my luck would have it that the person i asked to take the shot of the two of us would run away with the camera. Especially if it looks "expensive" or "professional'.
