Santa Cruz Island on the left, Santa Rosa on the right and out of sight we could see San Miguel on the extreme right and Anacapa on the extreme left.. all four islands which is very unusual.

I love LaLa's and Vicki's pictures of our time at the lake today. Peppermint, Melissa said the juvies were migratory and would be leaving any day now. Only the nesting adults remain full time. Missed you today.

Here are mine.

Hi all! Wanted to tell my story....we didn't see K81 or K82 (which we were hopint for) BUT here's what we DID see:

Yesterday (2/28/09) my husband and I were sitting in our boat cockpit in Cherry Cove off Catalina Island. We were watching the sun go down behind the ridge, when all of a sudden the seagulls went nuts - squawking and screaming and wheeling around - through their midst comes this bird that they obviously are not happy about - to my untrained eye, perhaps a hawk? OBVIOUSLY a bird of prey by the way it was flying, biggish for a hawk, but kinda small to be an eagle, and definitely NOT bald eagle looking. It landed on a rock on the hillside (north), and the gulls continued wheeling and crying - and then a raven showed up. The raven kept going over to the rock where the eagle was and squawking at it - quite annoyed at its presence. I leapt below and grabbed the binoculars. Sure enough, ORANGE WING BLING! OMG, it IS an eagle. Wait, didn't I read something about golden eagles also having wingbling? Hmmmm....my husband said "maybe it's young, it looks kinda gangly." Then I remembered that bald eagles don't look like bald eagles for several years. (When I got home tonight I looked on 'States of Plumage' and it looked very similar to the photo of A-40 at 1 year, but with more white. That same weird skinny neck.) So I'm peering and peering through the binocs trying to see what the tag says - I'm about 80% sure it was a 7, but it could have been a 9. My husband couldn't make it out at all.

My guess is that perhaps this was K-70:

According to the Wing Bling Reference Chart:

# K-70 (M)
From: Pinnacle Rock Nest.
Banded on: May 26/08
Fledged on: June 17/09 approx
Where now? Salta Verde .. southern coast of Catalina Island .. Catalina Update Jan 7/09
(Parents K-65 and K-92)

Now, I didn't SEE a zero after the 7, but I don't see any individual assigned the moniker K-7...and it definitely was NOT an 07....but the last sighting per the Catalina Update was in Salta Verde, which is the southern coast of Catalina. Cherry Cove is on the north/east middle coast.

Anyway, after sitting there VERY quietly, and letting all the other birds settle down, it suddenly leapt skyward, cruised toward us, banked right and came down RIGHT NEXT TO THAT RAVEN, who had something to eat (this was on the opposite side of the canyon from the rock the eagle was sitting on). SNATCHED whatever the raven was eating and flew off down the canyon, out of sight. The raven didn't even give chase....

We were SO sorry to see the eagle go. And, although it had a sort of gangly appearance whilst perched on the rock, when it flew it was a beautiful sight. That soar they do.....!

Anyway, that's the story! Can anyone confirm the likelihood of the bird we saw being K-70?

You have a good eye Karen. That is exactly what the grebes were doing!

The "puppy" is a seven month old French Mastiff. Of course he will grow to be huge, but the French breed is smaller than the Bull Mastiff.
