Unless you go to TJ's in the state of Pennsylvania with liqour laws dating back to prohibition. I cant even get the famous "two buck chuck" wine because wine and distilled spirts can only be sold by the state monopoly "wine and spirts" stores. Beer on the the other hand can be purchased from a restaurant/bar which has a malt beverage license. However one can only purchase 2 six packs. A beer distributor can only sell cases or larger no smaller packages. Wish i could just pull up to the local grocer or mass merchandiser and grab teh beers or even spirts. At least now one can buy from the monoply or hte distributors on sundays. |

Bea...I was raised in California with my mother's family, whereas, my father's German family was in PA. I wish I had known my German family and the recipies from my German grandmother. I made two trips back to PA. to visit my cousins, uncles and aunts and to see the town where all the family grew up but the one thing I never had were the recipies from my German grandmother. Both grandparents has passed on by the time I made the trip. They were coal miners except for one uncle...he went down in the mine one day, came back out at the end of the day and said he'd never go back down there. Chiquita |

Nah thats not necessary, and as i am off the beaten path its very easy to get lost on the way to me. The exercise is good for me anyway. Just contact me at least 1hr or so before you think you will arrive here. If i am in luck, i can just get dressed and then grab my am feeding while waiting in the clown cottage on the 2/$3 sausage egg mc nuthins. For special events, its so less stressfull to not have to cook before getting on the road. Call me either tonight or tomorrow on the land line. Once i depart here, i will have the cell phone on in case you have any trouble en route. 476 at rush hour can be so much fun.....NOT |

I'm amazed at the number of Cruzers with German roots here (not me)! How fascinating - I wonder if we compiled all the data from all of our ancestries, what it would show. I mean, would there be any statistical evidence that people of one extraction or another have a greater affinity for - say - birdwatching? Or is it more dependent on how we were raised and taught. The old nature vs nurture thing. I'm betting on the latter. Anyway Bea, you're "vacation" to Germany sounds a lot like my Christmas "vacations". Lots of driving with lots of people you must see in a short period of time. Very hectic and not at all restful. But you get to see your mom and that must make it all worthwhile. I can't imagine going five years without seeing mine... |

I am not worried about 476 at all. I took it out to Carlile, Pa. have driven down to Ga. three times, and never get stressed with traffic unless two 18 Wheelers are monopolizing the road as they did one year. I like to make time when I drive. Mr. Smokey the Bear came along and wrote them both up! I laughed. |

Oh yeah i know the feeling. I was en route back from Sweden and spent about 3 days in london. While i have one very distant relation in london that i did see, the us reations really heard from the rest over there about me not stopping by. Thought i had started word war three with that fiasco. In hindsight, i would have been better off not even contacting my dads cousin and just remained incognito. |

Bea, my great-grandparents were from Göttingen, one of Germany's beautiful towns. They came over in the early 1900's on the boat to New York, and Ellis Island. Have a fabulous trip in the homeland! My maiden name was Maeder, a popular name in Germany and Switzerland. I was teased with sayings like, Maeder, Maeder, fetch a Tater! Kids!My Great-Grandfather opened a 'German Beer Garden' in New York City in about 1909. See, that Bier is in my blood.

Really interesting story Chiquita! I don't blame your uncle. Mining work - wow. That must be so hard to do. About the foods, even if you have the recipies, most of the time you cannot get the exact thing you need for it here. Believe me, I have searched and searched, and though I can find a lot of the stuff in specialized stores here, there is always something that I can't get. And if you substitute.... well, then it's not the same anymore Iggle, my mom was here in 2006, so it's been 3 years since I've seen her, but 5 years since I've seen my bro
