Chiquita - Is there a link to the Catalina Islander?

Agree with you it's so important to have another language. It opened up a whole new world for our sons. The oldest is very fluent in German - took it in high school and college and spent a year at the University of Vienna studying in German. I went to a small high school and the language opportunities were not very good. :(

well my grandmother was of the richenbach and sylvester families! I have paperwork somewhere - the church records of the family while in Germany and when they left to come to US to be farmers in the midwest (well OHIO)! My great-grandmother spoke german but I was kind of young and she was really old to me so I wasn't interested! my dad spoke some but after she passed, no one else really spoke it anymore .... :( now looking back, that's too bad!

my grandfather's family was from France!

The Catalina Islander is online. The latest Islander is dated Feb. 27, 2009 but it is not up yet. It is a weekly newspaper and they are a couple of weeks behind in posting the current issue.

Lakemaryeaglewatcher...My grandchildren began their French immersion in kindergarten and continued at their language school in San Diego until they began high school in 9th grade. A second language, no matter which one, is so important now days. DH is Italian but when grandparents came from Italy they did not encourage the speaking of their native language in America, after all, they said it was important to learn the new language. I know DH wishes somewhere along the line the language could have been continued.

This was very common of the immigrants of the various ethnic waves of immigration we have had throughout our history. Even in the early part of the 20th century, one would see signs outside of buisnesses who wanted workers with signs reading "NINA" (no irish/italians need apply). This zenophobia was one of the reasons, besides the immigrant wishing to be with their own group initially, why we see the various ethnic neigbhorhoods whether it is in chicago, new york, philly, or san franscisco.

My mother regrets not being permitted to learn swedish from her parents. They arrived in this country or at least my grandmother did post russian revolution and the red scares of the early 20s. They mistakenly feard she would learn english with a "funny accent". During the depression my grandfather was one of the few who was employed because he had a skill being a carpenter. Every once and a while he would hear comments "those damn foreigners...." Despite the fact he had not only fought in the 1914-18 war but also took in phosgene, chorline and mustard gas and a few machine gun bullets while many of those "america firsters" as he calld them were convieniently not drafted.

I was in hindsight lucky to have been imersed in both french and spanish since 5th grade and carried on with french in hs. Alas, I never really caught on and do not consider myself anywhere near fluent nor conversational in french. However when i was in montreal years ago the french speaking people were not exactly nice but when i even attempted to speak french to them their attitude changed remarkably. I did do the same in paris and found similar reactions. Of course i did apologize that i didnt speak french well enough and was slightly ashamed to be doing such a bad job speaking it as poorly as i was

My great-grandfather coming to America, were fluent in English in not time at all. To open a business in NYC, one had to know the native language. So, German was spoke a bit at home, but my grandfather was completely english speaking. They're attitude was, we're in America now, we need to speak America's language. Ah, those were the days.

my ancestors arrived in the states and all headed west to find farming land - but one group made a big wrong turn (and they weren't even :bld: ) ending up not where they planned to be - but liked the area - very rich farmlands so they stayed! It was a very large area settled by Germans and the rest is history! (ps I was just glad that the Sylvester name was my grandma's maiden name - not the name I would end up with - whew - all I could think of growing up was Sylvester the cat!) rofl

My great-grandmother was from Alsace Lorraine, when it was still part of Germany, now being part of France. George, was your family from anywhere in that region?
