Bea, I lived 35 miles south of Munich -- all 2 lane country road then. My 2 youngest boys were born in Munichl I've heard it has changed a lot. What is the old saying? "You can never go home again". I think that just means, don't expect anything to be the way you left it. But it was a wonderful time.

No my maternal grandparents were from scandinavia, grandad from kalmarland in souther sweden and my grandmother was a swedish finn from the island of Foglo in the Aland archepelego in the Gulf of Bothnia between sweden and finland. Grandad was from southern wales while my grandmother's family goes back to at least the Salem Witch Trial days when her ancestor the minister was hung by Cotten Mather. After the second battle of the ardennes in 1918 and being gassed my grandfather spend alot of time at an army hospital near Grenoble france and actually became rather fluent in french according to my mother. I think alot of my ability to store factoids comes from all the training in history and my love of reading growing up. Every once and a while soemthing will click in my warped mind about some prior event of note hence why i am often tossing in tidbits on whatever forum i am in |

Well, I might as well jump on in here while the discussion is about German ancestry because I have some of that too on my mother's side. Her family name is Heidt and her parents came from Germany for the free farmland in Saskatchewan. I'm not exactly sure where they emigrated from either..will have to check up on that. Suffice it to say we never had a chance to learn any of that language either as my brother, sister and I really did not get to know too many of the kinder in my mother's family because we moved around a lot as we were growing up. I really don't think any of them spoke much German except for their parents. |

ZACH you tell Mom we are all rooting for her in her effort to quit. Tell her to keep telling herself ,"she can live without it". That helped me and a bunch of Wintogreen Lifesavers too. Give her all of the support she will need to win this battle. Tell her every day how proud you are of her and how much you love her. I know what she is going through. I quit a little over 200 days ago! It wasn't easy, but I did it for my Grandson Tommy. His Dad was diagnosed with Cancer, and he told me he didn't want to loose his Dad and me too. With that he asked me to quit, and at midnight that night I smoked my last cigarette! It wasn't easy, but I had a LOT of support here in Chat to help me stay strong and fight the fight. I'm a Winner! |

Cricket - yes! you are a winner - I'm very proud of you! Zach - I'll be keeping your mom in my positive thoughts. Re: Bachelor - did you see the Jimmie Kimmel interview on Yahoo? - what a crack up. I've been missing chatting!! After coming back from Dad's, my oldest daughter slipped, fractured her arm and now has pins and plates - OW! She's been staying with me since her surgery on 2-19. If she's ok on the 12th when they take out the staples, I'll be going back to Sedona for a short visit. There's not enough time in the day right now~~ |

Well you know the Vikings got around from New Brunswick Canada to Keiv russia and to the north of africa So with my family and the way the vikings raped pillaged and plundered england and ireland there could be some inbreeding many generations ago. OR for that matter anywhere they raided in the past. Irish lore has it that the irish women acutally preferred the viking invaders because unlike their irish men they at least bathed. Odd aint it Not necessarily, the black sheep of moms family was a swedish nazi who was an officer in the SS Wiking Division. Fortunately he got what he deserved and got blown up leading his tank colum on the russian front at the battle of Kursk. The thing was with the swedes being neutral was that they made money off of both sides. unlike both of our neutrality acts prior to both wars. While some us companies did business with the germans it was sort of back door unlike dealing with the french and english One additional triva tidbit. Leica cameras were the only equipment used by both sides. At the outbreak of war Ernst Leitz NY was unable to get parts from the parent company in wetzlar germany. Cameras were manufactured from parts on hand and also with parts made by domestic sources and these items were marked Ernst Leitz NY. Unlike the Whermacht, who used the german made leica lenses, many of the us issued and us marketed leica cameras came with lenses made by Wollensak who was based in Rochester NY |
