From The Union League's website:

The Union League, which occupies an entire city block in the center of Philadelphia’s commercial and cultural district, is a shining jewel of history in a city defined by such treasure. Founded in 1862 as a patriotic society to support the policies of President Abraham Lincoln, The Union League has hosted U.S. presidents, heads of state, industrialists, entertainers and visiting dignitaries from around the globe. It has also given loyal support to the American military in each conflict since the Civil War, and continues to be driven by its founding motto, “Love of Country Leads.”

Thanks, George. Being from Philly, I really appreciate those historical posts from you.

Ah the roadway historic marker i saw when i exited the old wanamakers department store was rather interesting too. One side read that it was there in 1840 The first portrait studio in US opend and where the oldest surviving photograph taken in us was shot by the then director of the mint on sept 25, 1839 which was within weeks of daguerre's process being announced.

It is rather funny that we seem to pass those historic markers and never get hte chance to read them as we wiz on by in our cars. I was on foot which made it alot easier thats for sure :)^

I walked down borad street and what they call now the "Avenue of the arts"
past such things as the university of the arts, the kimmell center, miriam theater et al and saw this huge greek like building on the east side of broad. Turns out that it was the school district of philadelphia's "highschool for the Creative and Performing Arts" . Dang now that irene cara tune "Fame" is running in my head

Fantastic! Just like being there, only better!! George, have you ever done any free-lance work? I think either the paper there or the teams themselves would be very interested in your shots.

I've been online looking at descriptions and photos of hawks and am beginning to think the one I saw today was not a Redtail at all, but a Northern Harrier. Does anyone here know about these hawks? Bea? Ian? Lala? I may have to go have a chat with Raptorman....

Last night, we had lots of guitars, keyboards, steel guitars, violins, a mandoline (sp?), and for the first time, we saw a guy playing the spoons! :P He had a suitcase of all different ones for different sounds. Also, for the first time, a lady was playing the "washboard" (not your grandmother's washboard). It was beautiful - on a strap - hung around her neck and provided a unique sound for the music.

We have another to go to Friday afternoon, going over to Port Aransas island that night, another on Saturday....

Marti, how about some photos! That sounds like fun.
:D
