Eaglepedia Revisited

March 3, 2008

One of the most important duties of the adult eagle is brooding, or keeping the young eaglets warm. Though eaglets have a downy coat, they, like newborn humans, are unable to maintain their proper body temperature for a number of weeks. The parent bird sits in the nest, with the chicks huddling underneath its body for a comfortable temperature. Sometimes the brooding adult will pull nest material closer about its body to provide even greater warmth. Brooding activity will be most intense for the first month. Cold weather, rain and high winds will also cause an adult to brood the eaglets close to its body. Within 2-3 weeks, the chicks will grow a second coat of down, which allows the parent bird to sit up or partially spread its wings.

(bird brood patch - not an eagle - guess they couldn't get one to hold still for photo)

Ravens vs Eagles

B-)) has answered a question posted about ravens - if you haven't seen the response - take a look - now we just need to find what kind of bird likes to harrass ravens - if we keep them pestered, maybe they'll leave the eagles alone! :<::

We are watching from Cave Creek, Arizona and also have a secondary home in Prescott Valley, AZ. We are retired now.

My husband raised all types of birds when he was growing up in southern California. He had many birds.  He had hawks, several types, pigeons, etc.  We used to own a retail plant nursery and sold it in Jan. 2007.  We set up the nursery to attract all types of birds.

We had hawks, peacocks (they laid two eggs & hatched one).  We were able to get the peacock chick to eat out of our hands.  We found your eagle cam through a family member.  We really enjoy watching the eagles and eaglets growing up.

We wish you had a cam on a condor nest and peregrine nest.

Hi there! I have been missing in action all winter but I am back now that the eagles are back! I am watching from the cornfields of the Midwest United States - northeast Illinois - a small suburb of Chicago called Lake Zurich to be precise. And there really was a cornfield across the street from our home until it was sold some years ago for a subdivision. I liked the cornfield better. I am very happy that K-10 and K-26 are back!

And a couple of "where are you watching from" .....

Dawn - I <3 Chicago - have visited there on several occasions! I'm originally from NW Ohio! Alexander - a nursery to attract birds - that's cool! I'm sure fellow cruzers have posted cam links from time to time for other birds - hmm condor?? that I'm not sure about.

OH and before I run - would 2nd hummer egg be hatching about now??? :X:
