Hello from Santa Cruz Island,

There has been a lot of activity at the nest’s and I love reading all the postings with interesting sightings and behavioral data. Dave, Suzzane and I have been concentrating on looking for possible new nests and continually checking on the nests with eggs.
Most of you know that the Pelican Harbor nest has two eggs with experienced parents. The Sauces nest is active this year as well and this will be the second year this pair attempts to raise eaglets.
The Sauces pair have nested in the same Monterey cypress tree as last year. The tree grove is on the western end of Santa Cruz Island and is exposed to the strong westerly winds. This is a photo taken close to where we observe the Sauces Nest.

This is a photo of A-02 a very dedicated mother incubating.

Here is A-02 just after a nest swap and she is getting some wind between her feathers.

Later in the week Suzzane and I went looking for the Cueva Valdez Pair on the north shore of Santa Cruz Island. Last tour we found the pair in their usual perching tree which lead us know that they don’t have an egg but possibly have a nest they might be working on. This week we were unable to find the Cueva Valdez Pair. This could indicate that there is a nest with eggs and they are incubating now. Best of luck to Stephanie and her Crew in finding the nest!
This is a photo of Cueva Valdez looking towards the east.

We also looked in the Willows anchorage area in search of any signs of the breeding pair. This is a view of their territory to the east.

As many of you already know A-46 Steven Jr., has made it back to the Channel Islands. Suzzane and I were able to see him twice last tour. He explored Santa Rosa for the first time and then he decided to visit Santa Barbara Island. I could not believe the GPS data when it was projected onto the map. He just decided to visit the smallest of the Channel Islands.

Here is a map of that show how he flew to the south to Santa Barbara Island and then back to Santa Cruz Island.

The next morning John Coggins a National Park staff yelled to me Eagle!! Eagle!!. I was in the office looking at the GPS data on the computer and I ran to the living room window and saw A-46. He was slowly gliding around the Navy sight on Santa Cruz Island. I quickly grabbed my camera and got these very patriotic photos of Steven Jr. A-46. He has truly mastered distance flying and has great confidence to explore in long distance.

Dave Roth has been on Santa Rosa and he has been observing the Trapp Canyon Nest. They are incubating proplerely and we hope they are successful this year. David mentioned to me how he watched the male bring the female a fish. He was also able to see other eagles where there is a food source from the seal rookeries.
Happy eagling. Till next time

Great report! Thank you! I must mention that the flag needs to be replaced though! And the old one properly disposed of (give it to a Boy Scout Troup-they will take care of it) :D

Fabulous update Cedrick! The Channel Islands are so beautiful, and quite hospitable to bald eagles it seems. If I fast forward five or so years in my minds eye I see many of them nesting and soaring on all the islands. IWS is well on it's way to a very successful project.

CEDRICK, SUZANNE & DAVID, Your Island photos are wonderful and the adventures of A-46 are continually so exciting! His flying right over your homebase like that is really something.

The photo of A-46 and the Stars and Stripes puts a huge lump in my throat. Spectacular! Great job in capturing the image so beautifully.

The FLAG is very worn, you all certainly could use a new one-- but even though it is tattered--it is always a most beautiful sight to behold.

Dear Cedrick, Suzanne and David,

Great report and fabulous photos! Stephen Jr. looks great. The flag, not quite as healthy as the bird!

It's just always good to get these reports and find out where all the "kids" are hanging out. Thanks so much for the work you all do.

Has anyone else noticed the Pelican Harbor nest being harrassed? Everyday for the past week or so, there are incidences, mostly in the mid to late morning, where K-10 has to defend his nest from something. Maybe ravens, since that's been mentioned in previous reports? Anyway, I fear a repeat of last year's unfortunate incident once the chicks are hatched and are left alone in the nest. I guess nature has to take its course, but I feel better for having shared.

Stephen Colbert Jr., A46, just looks beautiful against the tattered American Flag. He is our National Bird! Thank you all for your fabulous update, and the incredible work you do. It was great seeing one of my favorite anchorages, Willows. Thanks again!
