Eaglepedia Revisited

February 28, 2008
The Egg - Part III

* albumen is:
--------90% water & 10% protein
--------the embryo's water supply, but also serves as a 'shock-absorber' to help protect the embryo
--------buffers embryo from sudden changes in temperature

* shell membranes are:
--------attached to the shell are two membranes, the inner and outer shell membranes. They protect the egg from bacterial invasion and help prevent rapid evaporation of moisture from the egg.

* shell:
--------protects the embryo
--------contains thousands of pores (see diagram below) that permit gas exchange
--------generally white in cavity-nesters & colored and patterned in open nesters (for camouflage)
--------color is added to the eggshell from pigments secreted by cells in the wall of the uterus

Keratin fibers from the outer shell membrane can be seen above, attached to the
calcium carbonate crystals that make up the main shell structure. (keratin is like our fingernails)

Posted Image
Thousands of tiny pores like the one pictured above, cover the shell, providing a passage for gas exchange.

off to see the dr. shortly - probably last finger visit and I'd almost bet today will also be last therapy visit ....... she's obsessed with making my finger straight and I keep telling her it won't be happening! it's frustrating her to no end and of course that's not why I'm seeing her so.... I can do the stretches and stuff on my own.

gotta get myself packed up and on the way ..... will check in later

<::: Again - if you missed 'em - take a moment to visit the IWS Updates - as always - AWESOME!!! :><:

oh and about eaglepedia revisited above - I'm still amazed about all the holes in an egg shell - of course if I had just stopped and thought about it - duh ...... but very interesting! That's why Dr. Sharpe covered them in tegaderm while in the IWS nursery, if they were losing too much moisture - thru the shell! :)^

Hi all! @#$#$ red birdy woke me up again! He seems to always advertise for hens under my br window at sunrise this time of year. I am half tempted to dump a bucket of water out my window to give him a cold shower but i dont participate in any animal cruelty.

Observation on the Blackwater twins. Theyve really gotten large now and are being given time alone by thier parents.

Am uploading a clip from the estonian sea eagle cam site that i shall share if i dont have problems with photobucket. The estonians seem to have a great camera hookup and the video is tack sharp! :)^ :clk:
