Last night, on the news, a gentleman who has parrots that he brings to Laguna Beach for 'meet and greet' photo opportunities was interviewed because a red tail hawk had actually attacked and killed one of his favorite birds while it was on his shoulder According to the interviewer, the police had warned him about the redtail who had been seen in the area previously. The birds owner referred to the redtail as "a gangbanger hawk who did a drive by on his bird". He also alluded to the fact he would take care of that hawk if he tried it again !!! Now who in their right mind could blame a wild raptor for trying to get itself an easy meal if the opportunity presents itself? I feel very bad for the loss of his pet but I don't think he should refer to the hawk in those terms as if it were gang member  and what if anything could he do about it? |

guess I should have posted this in chat earlier today since it's scheduled for tomorrow - well better late than never: Saturday March 14 The time is set! Mouths are watering! . . . . . . . . ![]() If you have any questions, contact Artsy Mom/Penny or Eagle Duo. ![]() Hi all! Penny/Artsy Mom & I made a date last spring to meet at Hurry Curry (in Pasadena) for lunch when she came back to Pasadena this winter. A few people have mentioned that they'd like to come also. We'd love to have anyone join us that wants to. Hurry Curry mainly serves curry dishes of all kinds, but they do have a small non-curry menu, for those that don't like curry. They also will make the curry as mild or as hot as you want. Eaglepedia Revisited: March 5, 2008 All 9,000 species of birds have the same approach to motherhood: every one lays eggs. No bird gives birth to live young. Birds quickly form and lay an egg covered in a protective shell that is then incubated outside the body. Birds developed much greater mobility than a mammal, but at the cost of being unable to carry its growing offspring about in its body. Unlike, say, a dog carrying a litter of puppies. The large size of a egg makes it difficult for the female to retain more than a single one egg at a time - carrying eggs would make flying harder and require more energy. (Bird eggs vary in size from the tiny 0.2 gramme eggs of hummingbirds to the enormous 9 kilogram eggs of the extinct elephant bird.) http://www.pbs.org/lifeofbirds/home/index.html ![]() AND March 6, 2008 Just as an aircraft cannot fly if it is overweight, all female birds must dispense with the fertile egg as soon as it is formed. And because the egg is such a protein-rich high-nuitrition prize to all sorts of predators, birds must find a secure place to hatch their eggs. Although birds' eggs appear to be fragile, they are in fact extremely robust. The oval shape applies the same rules of engineering as an arched bridge; the convex surface can withstand considerable pressure without breaking. This is essential if the egg is not to crack under the weight of the sitting bird. It takes 26 pounds of pressure to break a swan's egg and 120 pounds to smash the egg of an ostrich. http://www.pbs.org/lifeofbirds/home/index.html ![]() (for size reference - eagle egg is 2nd from bottom) Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate. |

PANDA UPDATE Friday, March 13 Hunger takes precedence over playing with cub, at least according to Lun Lun. Yesterday, all that Xi Lan wanted to do was play with his mom, and all that Lun Lun wanted to do was eat. So, Lun Lun instituted the well-patented panda mom foot block. This involves Xi Lan continuously attempting to climb on, chew on, and generally pestering Lun Lun. While he does this, Lun Lun continues to eat her bamboo, while using her back feet to push, deter, and block Xi Lan from getting too close. Yesterday this continued for about 10 minutes, until Xi Lan gave up and he returned to his normal spot on the climbing structure to take another nap Kate Roca Carnivore Keeper II |

Penny what a horrible story about the Parrot and the Hawk! It reminds me of the incident at a coworker's Grandmother's funeral where they released a White Dove at the grave site. A Hawk suddenly swooped down and caught the Dove in mid air to the horror of all watching. Apparently it knew just where to find a regular meal.

In Alhambra there is an amazing store selling huge pieces of Chinese art called The Olde Peking Antiques Art Inc. where it is like walking into an historical time warp with Samurai warriors, Quan Yin statues. Temple pagoda's etc. The individual items are so huge it is mind boggling...sort of like a Vegas storehouse only this stuff is all 'real'...(read extremely expensive...$50,000 +). It would be akin to a museum with no labels. They also have modern pieces and here are two which are so far from their normal type of inventory.... This eagle was about 3 feet high and was carved from some type of 'rare Chinese stone'. It was priced at a moderate $12,000. ![]() ![]() The peacock was carved from a fruit tree stump and its attached roots represent the fanned tail. Price was $5,000. They had many numerous small items at reasonable prices too ![]() ![]() Click bigger |
