Harpo and Barb you guys are pretty funny. Who is gonna forget the most stuff? Actually, it never takes me long to pack. I like to travel light, and usually if there is anything else I really need, I can buy it at the other end! |

It was a very nice warm sunny day today, so I decided to go out with my new camera and lens and go looking for some shots. I found lots of raptors today - they seemed to be out enjoying the weather as well. I think it's going to be a learning curve learning how to take really good shots, and some didn't turn out, but I got a few decent ones. I'll post a couple of the best here - George, I will also post a few of the others in the photography thread as well, and perhaps you can give some suggestions on what I could try next time to improve on the results. I was heading along the highway to see if I could spot any of the red-tails at work, and I spotted one perched on the side of the highway on a fence, so I got off and took a road around until I was able to get fairly close. ![]() I did see my local work RTs as well - didn't get as good a chance for a shot, but they were I think taking advantage of the thermals and soaring around: ![]() When I was on my way out from the property at work, I stopped off at the mall beside to go to the Starbucks, and as I was driving out I saw a couple of large birds soaring low nearby, at first I thought they were hawks, but then I was surprised to see they were turkey vultures: ![]() Finally on the way home I stopped by the Etobicoke peregrine nest site (which is about 10 min away from where I live - for information on this nest you can see here: Etob Peregrines I immediately saw the adults gliding going in and out of the nest ledge, flying around. ![]() By far the most exciting thing though is when I noticed the female had returned to the nest ledge and seemed to be watching for something - then before I figured out exactly what that was the tiercel flew to the ledge and copulated with the female - I did actually get a couple of so-so shots of it: ![]()

Ian what luck today and great shots! Gary has his cam set for rapid shots (whatever you call it) and that way we get what we get - with the flying and soaring we could miss so much - luckily it's worked out pretty well doing it that way but that's about all I know - point it and push that button! again very nice! |

hmm the first red tail looks soft of focus. I suspect you were not using a fast enough shutter speed for a hand held shot. Use the 1/focal length rule for shutter speed even if you have to kick up your iso to get a workable expsoure If you can use a setting of a higher f stop at that shutter speed too than using hte lens wide open you may also have more depth of fieldEdit: EVEN WITH VR it can be tricky to get a shot of a moving object hand held with slower shutter speeds. Of course with the suggestion above the trade off is more digital noise in the image. (noise in a digital shot is like grain when shooting film. Faster films tend to be more grainy than the good ole kodachrome for example) So for example with a non digital lens such as a 400mm on the digital you would want to try to hand hold at at least 1/500th second by kicking up the iso setting if necessary or to be able to shoot with the lens stopped down more for more depth of field second edit: The falcons seem sharper which is why i suspect camera shake or a slower shutter speed than 1/focal length which could be why theyre not as tack sharp as you want them to be |

while ive been lurking off and on today i am going to retire to the horizontal position early since ive had an annoying sore throat and my sugars have been 3oomg +. I think i have a bug that needs to be knocked out which is causing my sugars to be screwy. I may be on and off tonight but if not you now know why NYTOL
