I thought so too George (about getting too close to the whale) but Harbor Patrol has not been out there telling them any different - did hear two kayakers got tipped over by the whale - it is the harbor entrance so boats have to slow down and stay between the buoys to come and go - whale doesn't have to follow those directions, but it seems to be keeping clear of any propellers thus far - just good feeding there right now - he isn't sharing and isn't in a hurry to leave. Pic in the paper the other day showed a whole lot of people on the sandbar watching the whale - kayakers can't see the whale down below so they do keep some distance, but tend to paddle along side the whale when it moves - lots of kayakers came out around 10am - about the time I left after the closeup shots - kayaks and team rower boats can be rented right there on the beach - guess I should have taken more pics of the whole area to give you an idea of what it looks like - even though boats enter the harbor area bet. the red and green buoys they then have to make a left turn bet. some more green and red buoys to where the owned slips are located - if they didn't turn left the boat would end up on the beach. Not sure I made any sense here. Maybe need to take some more pics. |

For the last week a 1-2 year old gray whale has been spotted in San Diego Bay. Marine biologists have said the whale might have been on its first solo migration between Baja California and Alaska when it found its way into the bay. They hope hunger will soon drive it back to the open sea. Chiquita |

Just loving everyones pics - they are all great and seems each person caputured something a little different. What a great group of wonderful people! Haven't tried Photobucket - got started on Picassa via Jann - yet didn't expect changes all the time - I'm not as good as you and others at computer stuff - have done far more then I ever thought I would - having to learn a new program at work as well - very challenging at times - and we have two more phases to go through - my documentation is still being done on paper (24 hour skilled nursing facilities are waaaaaay behind in computer use of documentation - we are told we are in the 1% of usage - they expect that to go up to 5% in the next 5 years. Got off track here - sorry. |

Everyone's pictures from yesterdays Cruzer event are terrific! There were as many cameras there and coverage as the red carpet of the Oscars Great job everybody and thanks to each of you for taking the time to post them all! GEORGE--You are correct there are rules and regs. when it comes to approaching whales. Believe it or not though, there are innumberable times these magnificent creatures come right up to the boats. My DH and I have had many, many close encounters with Grey Whales and Blue Whales when we are out on our sailboat. Here is one example: One time, last fall, we had two Blue Whales that were traveling together, change course and come right to us and pass us bow to stern, just about 3 feet from our beam. I must admit, for a few seconds I was worried they would bump us. I was at the wheel and DH was taking pictures. I kept thinking, okay, stay calm, they have great sonar, but I did turn the wheel away just to be sure. They just came by to check us out and gave us a nice whale kiss with one of their "blows". With the Blues, this has happened to us on numerous occasions. Every once in a while we see real jerks on the water, who do not respect the rules--the whale usually dives deep and takes off, thank goodness! |

I can hardly wait to see Sunshine Cleaners. It was filmed in and around the ABQ area. My dh's hospital room looked out at the Crossroads Motel. It is fun to see your hometown in the movies, I think. Or maybe I'm just easily amused.

Personally the whale can come across my bow anytime he or she wants! its the #$#@$#@$ morons on jet skis or hi hp motoboats cutting across the bow that $%#$%#$ me the @#$%@#$ off. Espeically when we are under sail and not motorized in a harbor. However, one time heading out there was a dip who kept cutting in front of us while under sail repeatedly. The marine police saw this and actually stopped them. Which i think results in a huge fine. We did see evidence of a few beer cans so they may have gotten nailed too for BUI (boating under the influence) which they seem to finally be paying close attention too than in the past. |
