I've found some info online with regard to Heart Island and Boldt Castle. Here is just a small bit of the history of Boldt Castle. I don't want to put websites here because of advertising etc.. If you'd like more detailed information you can do an online search. Brief History. . . At the turn-of-the-century, George C. Boldt, millionaire proprietor of the world famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, set out to build a full size rhineland castle in Alexandria Bay, on picturesque Heart Island. The grandiose structure was to be a display of his love for his wife, Louise. Beginning in 1900, Boldt's family shared four glorious summers on the island in the Alster Tower while 300 workers including stonemasons, carpenters, and artists fashioned the six story, 120 room castle, complete with tunnels, a powerhouse, Italian gardens, a drawbridge, and a dove cote. Not a single detail or expense was spared. In 1904, tragedy struck. Boldt telegraphed the island and commanded the workers to immediately "stop all construction." Louise had died suddenly. A broken hearted Boldt could not imagine his dream castle without his beloved. Boldt never returned to the island, leaving behind the structure as a monument of his love. For 73 years, the castle and various stone structures were left to the mercy of the wind, rain, ice, snow and vandals. When the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property in 1977, it was decided that through the use of all net revenues from the castle operation it would be preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. Since 1977, several million dollars have been applied to rehabilitating, restoring and improving the Heart Island structures. |

Thanks for that Carole.. I know my neices are knock-outs... one is still single and turned heads...it was so much fun walking down the main street in Palm Desert, everyone in shorts or dresses.. and yes, white pants everywhere... and it only took less than an hour, on the way home, for the temp to fall from 80 degrees to about 55 ....this is Palm Desert's prime time of the year... later on it will be too hot... |

Lala - I did talk to the gray whale about hanging around a oouple more weeks - that's about the time he did his "blow" so maybe that is a "yes". I'm not sure how deep it is but the ocean current must be pushing enough food into the area to keep him happy. I do know it is a man made harbor because Mr. Stern wanted the harbor there and not further down the coast which would have made a natural harbor, so now the entrance has to be dredged at least once a year to keep the sand from making yet a bigger sandbar than is already there - they are on hold for the dredging because of the whale. HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEANETTE AND JENNIFER! |
