Eaglepedia Revisited March 16, 2008 Eggs are also turned periodically -- from about every eight minutes by American Redstarts to once an hour by Mallards. The turning presumably helps to warm the eggs more evenly, and to prevent embryonic membranes from sticking to the shell. AND March 17, 2008 The eggs are dull white in coloration and may appear with some darkish flecks or staining. The surface of the shell is rough when compared to a chicken egg and the overall shape is rounder when compared to many bird species. On average, an eagle egg will measure 2.75 inches long by 2.25 inches wide, surprisingly small for a bird that will grow to have a six and half foot wingspan and weigh between 10 and 14 pounds before it leaves the nest in July. http://www.firstlightpower.com/eagles/default.asp ![]() bone clone egg (fake) ![]() 1st egg 3/1 - 2nd egg 3/3 - 3rd egg 3/6 (from a Massachusetts nest - link above) AND March 18, 2008 Bald eagles lay one to four eggs in late March or early April and both adults incubate the eggs for about 35 days until hatching. During the nest building, egg laying and incubating periods, eagles are extremely sensitive and will abandon a nesting attempt if there are excessive disturbances in the area during this time. The eaglets are able to fly in about three months and then, after a month, they are on their own. The first year is particularly difficult for young eagles. Only half may survive the first year due to disease, lack of food, bad weather, or human interference (USFWS 2003). http://www.nwppc.org/fw/subbasinplanning/a...agle(KPaul).doc ![]() Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate. |

Well, Just thought I would check in before schlepping off to the foot doctor this am. Nice to see that the CalTran Couple have thier first eaglett for us to view now too! I should be back early this afternoon if all goes well. I may try to do some train shots at the nearby station of some Amtrak trains heading west along the former PaRR's "Main Line" if the sprit moves me. Main Line=an area of the Philladelphia suburbs where the rich folks are located. Such as the late tv Guide publisher and ambassador Walter Annenburg and the widdow of one of the founders of the brokerage frim Janney,Montgomery Scott lived. The name derrives from the major 4 track east west line out of Philadelphia to Chicago of the Pennsylvania Railroad followed. Today there are homes of the "Old Money" Main Liners which are HUGE and the pretentious "Nouveaux Riche". Surprisingly one can tell the difference and there is to some extent a pecking order amongst them |
