Personally I hope never to be on the 405 again during rush hour...did it many years ago...and to think of it being shut down at any time is a nightmare...but right at rush hour...totally crazy. Of course, the problem is eased if there is no motorcade.

OK, Lala, what are your favorite nurseries in Orange County? I love Rogers Gardens in Corona Del Mar.

and...sorry to report... Natasha Richardson has passed away from injuries from her ski accident.... <3

Oh My Gosh, they said she was on an easy slope with an instructor, how could this happen to such a young woman. I'm so sorry for her family. How tough on them, one minute having a blast and next, you're gone. :(

I absolutly love Birds and Blooms! A friend sent me a subscription for Christmas and I devour it cover to cover. Lala - you really should send some photos in - yours are better than most in the magazine (although that bluebird is spectacular!).

Chiquita, you have one of them... Roger's Garden... the other one is in Huntington Beach on Beach, I think... Cynthia will have to tell me the name... it is the best ever... also Armstrong Nursery on PCH near Newport??? all three of them are so much better than what I have around here... will check with Cynthia right now and get back to you...

Ah sounds just like the fun of I 76 here in philly, which is two lanes from valley forge to the delaware river bridge in south philly. This is the imfamous Schuylkill Expressway derisively often referred to as the surekill crawlway.

Under the original interstate highway act of Eisenhower's administration interstates were supposed to have wide medians between the lanes, no left hand exit ramps and wide shoulders for breakdowns. The purpose of the medians wasnt only for traffic safety but to allow military aircraft to land in time of national emergency.

Well there are no wide medians between the lanes, several left side exits, and minimal if any shoulders on either side of the highway. The road was built along the side of the schuylkill river and blasted out from rock formations along the river edges which were close to the main railway lines out of philly to points west.

There are times when the road is closed for hours because of an accident. In fact a father of 3 was killed late last fall when a truck slammed into him and several other cars. The truck was comming from california to new jersey with a load of brocoli. The truck had serious mechanical issues and the truck driver was usign his emergency brake to stop en route. Turns out the owner of the truck knew the bad condition of the rig and pressured the gypsy truck driver to falsify his logs to allow for a speedy delivery of the cargo on time. To cap that off, the owner paid a sleazeball repair facility for valid state inspection stickers without ever having seen the truck let alone inspect it as per state law.

That accident closed the highway for over 8 hours while the pa state police investigated. yesterday the trucker, the owner of the truck and the owner of the repair garage were charged with vehicular homicide and other charges, Just goes to show that one never knows whether a car or truck with a state inspection sticker has a valid one or not until something happens to a poor motorist who did everything properly

Hi eagle - you can call me anything you like!

No the alpacas aren't mine - my brother retired from his stressful job in FL some years ago and then discovered he was bored. He found this job where he does little odd jobs on the "estate" side of a weekend "home" for a very wealthy developer (DC area). They have polo ponies (which they fly to Australia to winter - I swear) - a 12 hole golf course (don't think it's 18 yet) and the alpaca's - thoroughbreds - it's a super place for a retreat!

My DB/SIL live on premises and the owner and wife come out for one or 2 weekends a month to play golf and golf and golf - did I mention they like golf. Very wealthy folks but super super nice!

Did I mention that Mrs. Mellon of Carnegie/Mellon has a huge estate right across the road so it's $$$ land! rofl

here's a teensy bit of the property - see his private golf course - it's really nice

Deb, didn't you mention once that they also had a landing strip on their property? Can't really make out what's what in pix. What are all those little groups of 3 white dots. And where are houses, barns, etc. I'm great at reading maps, . . . . . on the ground! rofl
