The Zoo was just a block from our hotel, so had to go there.  I will post a few  :clk:  later.

Ah the National Zoo is fun to go visit. They were hte first to get Pandas from china after Richard Nixon opened up to the chinese.

This weekend is a huge shindig for the Philadelphia Zoo's 150th Birthday. Supposedly they were the first zoo in america to open. Alas, they do not have the space to exhibit like atlanta,dc, st louis or san diego does. In fact they have to get rid of their elephants and the last should be at their new homes early this summer :(

George, it was so big that we could not see all and they were expanding the Elephant exibit. Great Zoo!!

Well Peetie look at it this way at least you are not feeding him and it all going to waste in the runny poooo. I hope it is better soon so he can come home.

I am exhausted with tests this week.

George my speech class, of all things, brought my gpa down. But it's my own fault for not doing the last speech quite right. He gave me a B. My hypnosis class I got 3.9 but that's because I was absent one day and they took a test. I didn't study too hard for it. It was right after I fell out of the elevator. So wasn't happy w/o a 4.0!!

Photo Zoo Atlanta (This one seems to be the favorite to to use)

By BO EMERSON

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Friday, March 20, 2009

Lights, camera, action. Panda-monium is back.

Zoo Atlanta’s PandaCam went live again this morning, streaming the excruciatingly cute antics of Xi Lan and big sister Mei Lan, due to a gift by a panda fan and a partnership with EarthCam.

When it went dark Jan. 1, the sun went out for panda fans around the world.

“It was almost like they took my oxygen away,” said Frances Nguyen, a web designer in Gaithersburg, Md.

Then Mara Strock, a city administrator in the suburban Washington town of Burke, Va., wrote Zoo Atlanta a check for $10,000, to pay for a new server.

That piece of hardware, and a partnership with web-streaming content provider EarthCam, helped put Zoo Atlanta’s panda babies Xi Lan and Mei Lan (as well as parents Lun Lun and Yang Yang) back on the international stage.

Even before the cam went live again this morning at 10, gratitude to Strock began to pour in.

“You rock, Mara!” wrote “scrunchybear” at the Pandas Unlimited group on the Flickr Web site.

“Oh, I missed seeing little Xi Lan’s life,” said Nicole Vanderzon, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service and a resident of Odenton, Md. “I’m really impressed that one of our fellow panda fans has been so generous to bring it back up.”

Strock, 55, who’s visited Zoo Atlanta four or five times in the past six months, said she made the gift because “I think so highly of Zoo Atlanta, and I love pandas.” She’s also given money to the National Zoo in D.C., the San Diego Zoo and the Memphis Zoo, all of which feature pandas.

She says she isn’t a big spender (“I drive a [Hyundai] Sonata”) but has a nest egg that she’s willing to tap into. “I have some investments.”

She has heard from panda-philes as far away as Belgium, and she’s especially pleased a core of fans around D.C., who first got into panda babies when the birth of Tai Shan at the National Zoo in 2005 triggered a wave of panda-mania.

Atlanta’s PandaCam began generating 30,000 hits a day when it was inaugurated in 2006, after the birth of Xi Lan’s big sister, Mei Lan.

Because of health problems Strock uses a mobility scooter to get around, but says her problems disappear when she gets in front of the panda habitat. “When I get to Zoo Atlanta, it’s like I’m in a totally different world.”

Many others out of reach of the zoo get the same relief from watching panda babies onscreen, said Nguyen. “This is better than modern medicine. It’s good for your soul.”

Update on Eagle 09-0171

March 19, 2009

On March 19, the Wildlife Center surgery team, under the leadership of Dr. Elizabeth Daut, brought #09-171 into the operating room for some additional surgery — a pinioning procedure to amputate the metacarpal bones of the left wing. Because of an earlier injury, there was significant dead tissue and bone at the end of the eagle’s wing. Through this hour-long procedure, that area of the wing was cleaned up; Dr. Daut created a flap of skin over the wound to enhance healing and to protect the wound. The eagle will continue to be held inside for a few weeks for recovery and continued careful observation.

Some have asked if the cause of this birds injuries were known. This is what I received from Dr. Dave.

Our “best guess”

I'm afraid any guesses at the cause of injury on this eagle would be exactly that; guesses. If I had to narrow it down, I'd guess that this was an impact trauma rather than a fight with another bird or any kind of entrapment. The bird was negative for toxic blood lead levels suggesting that there was no predisposing cause. The eyes are also normal. In my opinion, the most likely cause of injury is collision with a vehicle. The injury probably took place 2-3 weeks ago based on the extent of healing that has already occurred.

This is the short story on Eagle 09-0171 for those who don't know...

Posted Image

This adult Bald Eagle — the tenth eagle admitted to the Center thus far in 2009 — was admitted on March 14. The bird had been seen on a farmer’s field near Suffolk for about a week — unable to fly but alluding capture. With the help of some food put out by the landowner, the eagle was captured by rehabber Lisa Barlow and brought to the Wildlife Center by NESTI volunteer transporter Dana Lusher.

The eagle has an old left ulnar fracture that is in the process of healing with fairly decent alignment (the radius was not fractured). However, it also has a traumatic amputation of the left wing at the level of the second digit. With these injuries, the bird is non-releasable.

The eagle is currently being treated with antibiotics, pain medications, and fluids; further assessments of the bird will take place during the week of March 16.
