GEORGE--Back in 2007 when Limuw was about to hatch at PH, K26 sat on the nest the entire day & night before--thru gale force winds. When K10 came to the nest, she would not move--so he left. Then early the next morning--around 7:00 to 7:30AM, if my memory serves me correctly, the egg hatched and Limuw was presented to the world --the winds of the day and night before had subsided and it was a calm, sunny, bird singing morning--with very elated, excited, teary eyes of happiness by all of us watching the event. Last year--I believe K26 was also incubating when the eggs hatched. Not certain, but I distinctly remember Limuw's hatching as if it were yesterday

Ah then my hypothesis may be correct in that the eagle hen is the one who oversees the actual hatching. I assume a female eagle is called a hen isnt she?? Even if not, it will make it more interesting for me to test this hypothesis and if it is so perhaps post an inquiry to the good as to if there is a reason for it

George--I think in the past ( maybe 2 yrs ago) I have read use the term "hen" in one of his answers to another question --it is not one used by posters here that I have seen. Call it silly of me, but the term "hen" just doesn't seem regal enough for an Eagle. The science world wisely keeps our human emotions out of descriptions. |

"Hen" is a valid term to be used for a female eagle (or any female bird). It does not have any undesirable anthromorphic implications. I personally would much rather see the word hen used to describe the females than "babies" being used to refer to the eaglets, for example. That's still a bit of a pet peeve of mine - the eaglets aren't mammals and thus can never correctly be referred to as babies. Eaglets, chicks, yes, babies, no.

Just got back home. George, hope you don't have to go this way tomorrow! Spill of dangerous acid prompts Pa. evacuation From Associated Press March 21, 2009 5:45 PM EDT WIND GAP, Pa. - A tractor-trailer carrying a dangerous acid overturned on a highway Saturday, prompting authorities to order thousands of residents to leave town for almost nine hours. The tanker, carrying 33,000 pounds of corrosive hydrofluoric acid, a component for household detergents, flipped over at about 3 a.m. on the edge of Wind Gap, about 60 miles north of Philadelphia. I would tend to agree. however using the proper term hen could open up a floodgate for the improper use or perception of the term for the male. you know how some can misread a post or twist its meaning to appear as offensive for whatever reason |

Luckily for me I am nowhere near that accident. It is between allentown pa and stroudsberg pa to the north. Fortunately i think they have the spill cleaned up and there were no fumes that migrated over to the delaware water gap which wasnt that far to the north and east. I am roughly 85 miles south and west from there |

Pat - So sorry to hear of Aline's passing - I remember reading her posts and seeing the small pics of Quebec at the bottom - she will indeed be missed - thoughts and prayers for her and her family. Have had a busy day - went shopping this am, then met friends in the afternoon to attend the SB Orchid Show - thousands of people there, now going to neighbors to see what jewelry she made from her visit (where I ran into her) at the SB Gem and Mineral Show held in Feb. Will post some pics of orchids later. |

My heart goes out to Aline's family and friends who are missing her now and will continue to do so. I have missed her delightful posts as I'm sure many forum members have and we will also continue to miss her. Happy trails...
